Thanks for the info.It was manufactured in dec. 03.I doubt it is under warranty. As I said I'm glad I was home and my house didn't burn down. The odd thing is that I was only using the timer not cooking.

Hi,

No, that is not common; it's likely a bad transformer and/or magnetron. Check to see if the unit is under warranty, if it is call the manufacturer or store where you bought it. If it’s not under warranty, it would be best get a new microwave.

Yes, there is a thermostat device located on the magnetron. It will open up (turning off the magnetron) when it gets too hot, and it will reset automatically after it cools back down (in 5 to 15 minutes). The question is, Why is is over-heating? Usually it is caused by the exhaust fan being turned the wrong way. (For example, it may be set to exhaust the air out through the top of the microwave, but you don't have a vent there.) That fan can be turned to exhaust air out the top, out the back, or recirculate the air back through the front of microwave. It's easy to turn it around - the hard part is that you have to take the microwave down to be able to pull the fan out and rotate it the right direction.

If you use a sensor function, the sensor may be obstructed, please clean the sides and top of your microwave with a dishcloth, warm water, and soap to dislodge any rough or stained spots.
If setting a timer, when setting to bake please pay close attention to the unit of measure so that you set it right, minutes vs. hours as you may leave the oven to do its business and return without noticing it did exactly what you told it to do but you had thought you entered a longer time.

My microwave shuts off after cooking for 1 minute or two. display goes blank and then 3 or 4 minutes later the display comes back on again.

You didn't mention your brand or model number, but it sounds like it may be a noisy magnetron.

See this FixYa solution. even if your model number is different.

I have a Jvm1090aw. After using the convection oven the microwave will not function. Is this a moisture sensor or?

I have a jvm1090aw microwave oven and for some reason it just stopped working. It will still count down the timer but it won't light up and turn on. Also there is a small microwave icon flashing at the bottom right of the screen. Any ideas? Today I tested it again and started it for 30 seconds. The first 8-10 seconds nothing but silent counting down then it turned on for the last 20 seconds. It then turned on again when I tried it immediately after that but nothing 5 minutes later.

Does the exhaunst fan turn on automatically when we cook or warm food items in our Samsung Microwave -- SMH 9187W?

Some interesting reading on page 8 of the owner's manual:

"Boilovers cause smoking and greasy spillovers that may ignite and spread if the vent fan is operating. To minimize automatic fan operation, use adequate sized cookware and use high heat on surface units only when necessary."

And on page 20:

"If the temperature becomes too hot around the microwave oven, the fan in the vent hood will automatically turn on at the LEVEL 2 setting to cool the oven. The fan will automatically turn off when the oven has cooled down sufficiently. This is an automated process and cannot be turned off. The fan may stay on for 30 minutes or more after the cooktop and microwave controls are turned off. The Vent Fan will only operate in 1~4 levels modes while the microwave is working."

"Using the Vent delay off button
1. Press the Delay Off button once to turn the fan off after 1 minute.
2. Press the Delay Off button twice to turn the fan off after 3 minutes.
3. Press the Delay Off button three times to turn the fan off after 5 minutes.
4. Press the Delay Off button fiour times to turn the fan off after 10 minutes.
5. Press the Delay Off button five times to turn the fan off after 30 minutes."

If for some reason you don't have your owner's manual, you can still download it free here.

No power at display!

You've probably destroyed your magnetron, and the magnetron thermostat.

This kind of abuse will not be covered under warranty.

It will likely run about $75 for a technician to visit the home, $75 to do the work, $75-90 for the magnetron, and about $15 for the thermostat.

Erratic microwave timer dial

You can visit LG's site here and pick your region, then your country.

Then look in the red strip near the center top for the Service Centers link.

They may sell parts in case you or a friend want to do it yourself, but if not, they certainly can do the repair for you.

If it's less than one year old, it should be fully covered under warranty, I would think.
