This problem happened before and I spoke with someone that directed me to type in something on the remote to change the format at the top of the home screen (picture format). What im saying is this problem is not in the manual.

How do I do this? (switching between auto format and 16:9).

Their are 2 ways that a Universal Remote can control your zoom. If it is the type of Universal Remote that you aim your remote at if to program the Universal, and it is capable of taking all of the functions of your original remote, then you could control the Zoom. The other way is if the Universal Remote was manufactured by RCA and they built in all of the functions for their TV's.
Unless you buy one of the higher end Universal Remotes, those that sell for between $150-800.00, most of then will only let you turn your TV on and off, and change the channel and volume. The manufacturers of the more expensive remotes program their remotes to give you full control over your TV.
The other choice you have is to order a replacement remote from RCA of the same type that came with your TV.

Hi.

Go to Picture Menu > Advanced Picture Menu and set Autoformat and Film Mode On/Off. Also ensure that no PIP zoom is active.

Follow the instructions at page 34-37 of the manual here.

Regards.

You can reset picture format settings simply by disconnecting power cord.

Also ensure that the TV is not set on the wrong input. There should be an input\source button on the remote.

If possible test the TV disconnecting all cables apart antenna.

If TV goes completely dark at random times, without changing settings, then the problem is the inverter board.

Sometimes, when the problem is the inverter, you can see a faint picture by pointing an hand torch light near to the screen with a 45 degree angle.

If the problem is picture format or settings, you should see the on-screen menu on the TV when you use volume or change channels. If there is noting, then it is the inverter.

Hi, sorry. I posted on the wrong problem.

My last comment was for a different TV from a different asker. Your TV does not even have the inverter, and the problem is just Picture format, not black screen.

I will see what I can find on the specific model and keep you updated.

    Regards.

As far as I know this TV, like most RCA diagonal projection, does not allow direct selection between 4:3 and 16:9.

What you can change from remote is switching between auto format and 16:9. The same that you can do on menu.

Try also disconnecting TV power cable for five minutes to reset the set.

In the original remote there were the keys Zoom, Swap, and PIP controls to modify picture size. This commands are usually not available on universal remotes.

I have an 1998 rca premiere and it keeps changing channels by itself and turning itself up

You need to change the picture-size by using the TV remote and or cable remote.
On the remote look for P-Size, Zoom, Sreen size or Ratio.

Top and bottom of screen are cut off how do we adjust to get screen to fit

Press the "Aspect" button on the remote until the picture looks appropriate. You are probably trying to display a 4:3 ratio channel on your 16:9 ratio TV. You are probably viewing it in "zoom" mode, which does not stretch the 4:3 ratio video, but enlarges it until it fits the width of the screen, which zooms part of the video off the top and bottom of the screen.

TV zoomed in

Look at your remote or On-screen menus for ratio settings. The remote might say zoom or ratio. The menus will probably have it under video and then Aspect Ratio. You'll probably need to hit go through several settings to get to the correct ratio. (some choices are 4:3, 16:9, Full-screen - the best choice depends on the set and the source video)

I hope this helps.

My tv the picture is bigger than the tv screen

it sounds like you have hit the zoom button or your aspect ratio isnt right. the aspect ratio should be set to 16:9 (if there isnt a button for aspect ratio, change it in the menu) and there should be a zoom button on your remote and just keep hitting that and it should return to normal. If neither works, post your tv brand and model and i'll try to find another answer

Zoom control

Use the menu key on the set it has a size selection in the menu set it on widescreen or 16:9 I suggest buying a new original remote as even a new RCA universal remote may not have the ZOOM or aspect control on them.

Wrong aspect ratio!

It was the zoom !! I lost the tv remote, I went to Radio Shack for a Universal remote and they didn't have one with a Zoom button,
The tv menu doesn't have a Zoom button either...Finally found one that works and all is WELL! Depending on what the tv station transmits, the screen size changes in the auto-matic selection in the menu.
