How can I fix this and how can I keep this from happening again?  I have the sticker that I got when I bought my computer last year but when I typed in the product key from the sticker...it said that it was not valid.  What can I do????  Does this have anything to do with the INTEL(R) EXPRESS CHIPSET updates?  It seems that both times this happend I had just installed new updates.....

Diagnostic Report (1.9.0027.0): ----------------------------------------- Windows Validation Data--> Validation

> Blocked VLK
> Windows Product Key: *****-*****-3R89F-D2KXW-VPK3J
> Windows License Type: Volume
> Windows OS version: 5.1.2600.2.00010100.3.0.

Where did you obtain the CD-ROM that you used to install Windows,
using that Product Key?

A "VLK' is a "volume license key" -- when some organization purchases a specific number
of licenses to install Windows XP, Microsoft issues a "volume" license-key,
so that all (up to the number of licenses they purchased) computers in that organization
can use the _same_ license-key.

If Microsoft detects that the product-key is being used *OUTSIDE* of that specific organization,
then Microsoft will *BLOCK* all attempts to "activate" Windows that cite that product-key.

I did a Google-search for '3R89F-D2KXW-VPK3J' and Google reported 37 THOUSAND web-pages that contain that string. That is a *DEFINITE* sign that the VLK has been "leaked" onto the Internet.

So, you are trying to use a "non-genuine" copy of Microsoft Windows XP.

Thus, you are a "SOFTWARE PIRATE".

Purchase a *GENUINE* copy of Windows XP (or Vista or 7) and install it,
and throw away your "pirated" copy of Windows.

I am getting a message "You may be a victim of software counterfeiting"on my laptop. Also the screen is black and no icons and start menu and shortcut icons are not visible on the screen. Please help me...

Windows validation software (Be it Windows XP to Windows 7) has deemed that the Validation Key (VLK) that was used to install your operating system was not legally obtained. If you think this is in error, you can use the Windows Genuine Validation site to check this. Just click on the Validate Windows button and follow the instructions.

Because the validation software has currently decided that your VLK is invalid, it has disabled many desktop features to make itself more evident. This is why the screen is black, no icons, update doesn't work etc etc.

If the the Windows Validation site determines that the VLK is indeed invalid then you have two options to re-validate Windows. One is legal, the other is NOT.

The easiest and legal method implies purchasing a valid windows license key. Simply follow the instructions from this page.

The harder, potentially frustrating, not recommended and certainly illegal method is detailed at these pages.
XP
Vista
Windows 7

This copy of Windows did not pass genuine validation

according to the statements which you have specified the computer says that the operating system you are using is not an original software and may be a pirated version.i can suggest you two things. if you have bought the operating system xp as an original one from a dealer contact the support of microsoft and sort your problem immediately. but if you have installed the operating system from a pirated version, enter a new volume license key and switch off windows update. you will be under risk if you are updating a pirated version of xp.thanks for using fixya!.please dont forget to rate my solution.

This copy of Windows did not pass genuine validation

If your laptop has a genuine licence sticker, that can be the result of a wrong system setup.

If you do not have licence sticker you will be asked to buy a copy of Microsoft Windows.

In either case when this happens you are invited to contact Microsoft, see:
