This is due to a spindle motor problem, the bearing in these motors wear out rather prematurely, the spindle motor is the motor that spins the disc once it is inserted. If this motor does not reach the predetermined speed then the units pickup lens can not read the TOC (Table of Contents). It can also be caused by a weak or bad pickup lens (Laser) the easiest way to rapair this problem is to have the mech assembly replaced, the assembly comes with the spindle mtr, stepper motor, and laser pickup it is a complete assembly.

try the steps below. Its from PlayStation Forum:

1. Turn off Playstation®3.
2. Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again.
3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps
4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.
5. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via USB and then hit the PS button
6. The Recovery menu will pop up.

The current Recovery Menu supports:
• Restart System: Restarts the PLAYSTATION®3 System.
• Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default.
• Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files.
• Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for the PLAYSTATION®3.
• Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; Deletes everything and starts from Scratch.
• System Update: Update the PLAYSTATION®3 System

If the above steps still does not solve the problem, then I think will have to update your Ps3.

Update your PS3 (in the settings menu the 1st option).

Go on the internet browser on the PS3 then go on the menu press triangle then on one of them there are delete cookies and the delete the others as well as cookies.

You could also try this as well: put the PS3 on then press the eject button (with no disc in) then hold it and switch the PS3 off at the back with your finger on the eject button still holding it, then put it back on and the fan test should be working this may cool it down. It might be over heating.

If after trying the above options and it still does not solve the problem, then maybe the lens is weak and that's why it cannot read any disc.

But if your problem is not still solved, then maybe you should call sony for further assistance.

Good luck.

Sony's PlayStation 3 home video game console may seem advanced, but it
operates in much the same way any other disc-based device does: with
lasers. Once a disc is played in the PS3's disc tray, the internal laser
hits the disc as it is spinning. This allows the PS3 to read the data
contained on the disc at high speeds, which is how you play your video
games and watch your DVD and Blu-Ray movies.
Occasionally, the PS3 laser lens will need to be cleaned to ensure that
    it continues to function properly.

    jQuery('.intro .thumbnail').each(function(i,e){
    jQuery(e).find('img').one('error',function(){ jQuery(e).remove(); });

      Clean with Compressed Air

    1. One way to clean your PS3's internal laser is to use a can of
compressed air. This is highly pressurized air contained in a can with a
thin nozzle on the end. It is designed to get dust and dirt out of
small spaces. Cans of compressed air can be purchased at any major electronics
retailer, such as Best Buy or Radio Shack. Point the can's nozzle
toward the PS3's disc tray and lightly spray for a few seconds to remove
      loose dust from the lens.

    2. Use a Laser Lens Cleaner Kit

    3. Also available are laser lens cleaning kits that work with the
PlayStation 3. These kits contain a disc that is inserted in the PS3 the
same way you would a video game or movie. The difference is that there
is no data on the disc; it is designed specifically to spin in such a
way that it gently cleans that PS3's laser lens, removing all dust, dirt
and smudges in the process. These kits will also work on DVD, Blu-Ray
and computer disc drives, in addition to the PS3.

    4. Maintain the Discs

    5. One way to make sure your PS3 laser stays clean is to keep track
of the discs themselves. Examine a disc before you put it into your
PS3's disc tray. If there is any dust or dirt use a dry, soft cloth to
gently remove them before play. Dust and dirt are easily transmitted to
the PS3's laser lens as the disc spins around at high speeds in the
tray. By keeping the discs clean, you can make sure you don't have to go
out and spend extra money on cleaning your PS3 laser lens in the first
    Take care.

Hi Danny41,

The disc reading problem is quite a common one!

It is caused by the laser coming away from the drive and you need to readjust the laser to get it to work.

Sounds bad but at least the drive is not broken JUST the laser needs readjusting.

Now let us look at how you can fix this:

Solution 1:

The normal way to fix this is to send it in and they will do the work for you at the factory. However it will cost about $150 and also you will have to wait about 4 weeks.

If you do not play on your PS3 that much this may be the best solution for you.

Solution 2: For A Faster Fix

If you want the games reading problem fixed quickly then you should check out some good PS3 Repair guides.

They normally include videos showing you how to readjust the laser - it takes about 20 mins.

Make sure you check out the full reviews below so you can fix a good one!

My ps3 wont play ps3 discs but it will play everything else

That will either be a problem with the blue ray disk reader or the disk tray. You will need to take it to your nearest game console service to be repaired. unless you have warranty of course.

The ps3 will freeze up when playing a game and wont read disks

If your PS3 is freezing up then this happens in much the same way as the 3 red lights on the Xbox 360.

The GPU and the CPU heat up and you need to stop the heat to fix it.

You can send it in and pay $130 to get it fixed or you can use the recommended PS3 Repair guide that will have it fixed for you in under an hour!

Also sounds like you need to re-set the laser for the drive.

There is a good chance this is a hardware problem you can't fix.

The first thing you should do is try cleaning the laser. There is a video of how to do it here:

If that doesn't fix it, you are going to need to send it in to sony.

My new ps3 wont play my ps3 game it just shows a spining circle top of the screen and wont play

I am sorry to hear that you are having problems with your new PS3. Unfortunately when you receive that spinning circle it is indicating that your system is not reading the game. This could happen because the disk is damaged or there is a problem with the laser.

If this is a brand new system, your laser should function properly. Try cleaning the disk and reinserting it into the PS3.

If this continues to happen then you most likely will have a laser malfunction. If the system is brand new you should have some type of warranty to get it fixed with no charge.

You can always contact sony to find out if you have a warranty or not. The number for Sony is usually listed on the back of your video game booklets.

I hope I was able to fixya problem and Happy Gaming!

Ps3 disk reading error

Can you be any more specific? is this a problem with one disk, one type of disk or all disks? What is the exact error you are getting? Are you trying to play a game, play a film, play an audio CD or are you using your PS3 as a Linux computer and trying to open a data disk? have you tried more than one disk? Without specifics there's just no way to guess what the problem is.
