Sorry it is too old to do much with it. To goto a dual processor would be a new motherboard. It would be more efficient to buy a newrt faster one with a warranty

CPU upgrade?

On Laptops, pretty much impossible. Buy a new one or optimise your old one to run faster. You can add more RAM, but even that costs more on a laptop!

Usually, it is not possible to upgrade the cpu on a laptop. In rare cases where it is possible the upgrade usually costs nearly as much as a new laptop.
However, you can significantly upgrade the laptop's performance by adding more memory and by replacing the old slow hard drive.
Your Sony VGN-Z250 is usually supplied with 3GB of RAM memory. You can replace the existing memory modules with a new kit consisting of 2 x 2GB modules (total 4GB). The type of memory you need is "SO-DIMM" (meaning laptop size) DDR3 - 1066MHz (you may use 1333MHz memory but it will only run at 1066MHz speed). I would suggest either G-Skill or Crucial brand memory. And you can replace the hard drive with an SSD. You'll be amazed at the boost this provides, seriously. I would suggest either Samsung 840 EVO or Sandisk Ultra for an SSD. Both offer super-fast performance compared to your old spinning hard drive, and both have very low power consumption so they run cool and give your laptop a few extra minutes of battery power. You can clone/copy your existing Windows setup onto the SSD using free Macrium Reflect software or free software from the SSD maker's website. Or, you can do a fresh install of Windows.

My old computer that I have XP on is just too slow. I hate Windows 7 and do not care for Vista. My problem is that I am told that my new computer will not run XP because it is 64 bit. Two questions: Is...

Xp will run fine on any PC but it may not utilise all of your ram and CPU cores. You will get more performance from your machine if you use a 64 bit operating system but XP will run.

Which processor can I upgrade to?

Honestly, it is normally not worth it to upgrade the cpu on a laptop. Laptops are build to deal with a certain amount of heat and adding a faster cpu can cause the current cpu cooling fans to not get the job done anymore. You will seem instability in your system and could possibly damage it due to over heating.

With that said you would only be able to upgrade to a very slightly higher speed cpu and your money would be better spent else where. Some good ways to speed up a laptop are max out your memory or install a faster hard drive. For example if your current drive is a stock 5400rpm unit a 7200rpm drive would give you a nice boost. You could also look into a solid state option.

Both these upgrades will give your laptop a better boost without the hassle and risk of a cpu upgrade.

MS FlightSim is really tuff on the processor. You are better get a Quad Core Intel Processor, as no upgrade is possible for your Laptop. Also get a good graphic adapter, something like ATI Radeon 4850.

Update of laptop

Windows Millenium Is not recommeded as it was never very stable and has no support anymore

Although it also has no more support , Windows 2000 Pro is far more stable and requires the following minimum system specs

Minimum Requirements Computer/Processor 133 MHz or higher Pentium-compatible CPU Memory 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM recommended minimum; more memory generally improves responsiveness Hard Disk 2GB hard disk with a minimum of 650MB of free space

Look Here and you will see that you laptop can have up to 144MB memory. 16mb is non removable and the rest is by replaceing the current 64mb stick with a 128mb stick instead.

This caught my attention

" picked up a 30GB Toshiba disk today, but wasn't sure it would fit. some old BIOSes won't recognise large disks. I was worried that my Tosh would only recognise up to about 8GB, which is apparently the largest disk size you can fit in the model below mine.
It was, however, just plug and play. I swapped out the disks, noting that the new disk is half the thickness of the old one, despite having 15 times as much storage, and powered up. Starting up the RedHat install showed that my Tosh was now equipped with a 30GB hard drive. Pretty cool really, for a Pentium 133."

Yes hes running linux , not windows but it looks like you can have a 30gb drive in the laptop intead of the 2gb.

Acer Aspire 5315

I have a friend who has an Acer Aspire 5315 running Vista and it was pretty slow right out of the box with 1gb of ram. I upgraded his Ram to 2gb and it ran moderatly faster and smoother. Vista is a demanding OS because it's so graphical in nature. Windows Vista requires more ram then XP plus a better CPU to run smoothly. His had a 1.6ghz Celeron which is not that great of a CPU to begin with but uping your ram will usually up your performance a few degrees. Be careful with cheap ram it can run hot and unstable. Make sure go with a name brand PNY, Corsair, Kingston, etc. Don't just buy House ram (generic) because it's cheap. It's not worth wasting your money on junk ram.

Hope this helps. M~
