What is best free software for burning a dvd from movies you have downloaded (they play fine in Gom Player when I save them to desktop but want to burn them to dvd so that they will play even on an ordinary dvd player, not only an optical drive for a pc.) Tried Ashampoo 9.0 burning studio, but when I attempt to create a dvd from the files that will play in any dvd player, even one hooked to the tv, it takes a very long time to convert from avi? file to the format required to make a dvd so that it plays in Any dvd player.

please read notes, program deep burner has some bad reviews on cnet, notice I currently am using paid vers of
ashampoo studio 9.0; however it takes a very long time to create a dvd from my movies That Will Play In Any DVD Player, even one hooked to a tv; while very easy to use, why the very long time to create a real dvd, not one that only plays in a computer? Maybe an external usb dvd burner would be a better option than the dvd burner in my t41 thinkpad?

  • JOE Apr 29, 2010

Still have not answered why it takes so long to create a dvd that plays in Any dvd player, not just an optical drive in a pc??
An ordinary 'data' dvd with 4 movies on it created by ashampoo takes approx 20 min to burn, plays flawlessly in Gom Player.
However, when option 'dvd that plays in all dvd players' is selected, conversion process takes very long time at 100% cpu?
What do you think of an external dvd burner (usb), would this help?
By the way the highest speed option on ashampoo seems to be 2x for burning these to dvd
(maybe because internal dvd burner on t40 laptop has its limitations?)
Please read all notes, prior notes before responding, thank you.

Hi,

If you prefer commercial CD/DVD Burning or mastering software, you might want to look at Roxio Creator 2009 or Nero Burning ROM instead. Obviously, you need to pay an Amount.

However,if you are looking for Free Software's ( Normal Use ), you could take a look at :-

    Reply

    Yes, they do have Limitations.
Unlike CD-ROM drives, which took years to move up to 2x, 3x, and faster
spin rates, faster DVD-ROM drives began appearing in the first year. A
    1x DVD-ROM drive provides a data transfer rate of 1.321 MB/s
(11.08*10^6/8/2^20) with burst transfer rates of up to 12 MB/s or
higher. The data transfer rate from a DVD-ROM disc at 1x speed is
roughly equivalent to a 9x CD-ROM drive (1x CD-ROM data transfer rate is
150 KB/s, or 0.146 MB/s). DVD physical spin rate is about 3 times
faster than CD (that is, 1x DVD spin ~ 3x CD spin), but most DVD-ROM
drives increase motor speed when reading CD-ROMs, achieving 12x or
faster performance. A drive listed as "16x/40x" reads a DVD at 16 times
normal, or a CD at 40 times normal. DVD-ROM drives are available in 1x,
    2x, 4x, 4.8x, 5x, 6x, 8x, 10x, and 16x speeds, although they usually
don't achieve sustained transfer at their full rating. The "max" in DVD
and CD speed ratings means that the listed speed only applies when
reading data at the outer edge of the disc, which moves faster. The
average data rate is lower than the max rate. Most 1x DVD-ROM drives
have a seek time of 85-200 ms and access time of 90-250 ms. Newer drives
have seek times as low as 45 ms.

    Question

What do you think of an external dvd burner (usb), would this
    help?

    Solution

    Yes, that would help.

    Solution

I would say - Region and Number of Formats.

These are again factors that affect the Speed.

    Hi again,
Got you covered - - but please my friend - : it takes a very long time to convert from avi?" is a statement with poor grammar - lol - - Seriously - The problem is RAM - you need to beef up your ram and check your processor speed. Ram is the cheapest thing to do to make a pc faster.

As for Deepburner - I have used it for a long time and it burns everything I toss at it and it is simple too.
Read the good reviews as well - - some times competition will give bad reviews when they want to bring down a good service. We all suffer for lack of speed when converting or burning as it is a long complex operation. One last thing - when you make a DVD - it is not like a CD - it should play anywhere. Be sure you clean the new DVD's with windex - and also - format the new disk before you put anything one them - this helps a lot.

Best of it - You can still rate me up if you like.
Thanks for letting Fix Ya help
    Gary

How do i play a DVD on my computer? I is a Satellite Pro L770 Series

You need DVD playing software on the laptop to play. It usually comes with the laptop if you have the original install disks. Otherwise you will need something like http://download.cnet.com/Easy-DVD-Player/3000-7970_4-10104512.html

Every time i open the GOM player it would ask for "FIND codec"

GOM Player includes many codecs (XviD, DivX, FLV1, AC3, OGG, MP4, H263) Along with different media format such as AVI, MPG, MPEG and DAT, GOM Player also supports streaming Windows media format (WMV, ASF, ASX).

Possible Reason:

* Ensure that you have downloaded a genuine version and not a broken file, which is likely to miss some codecs, GOM is a FREE media player with popular audio & video codecs built-in. So you won't need to install separate codecs for most videos. For those videos that require a separate codec, GOM Player will find one.

* Without the appropriate codec, you'll be prohibited from playing AV files/the codec for which the file you are playing is missing (playback error), which prompts you to "Find Codec" screen. In the case you need other codecs, the 'Find Codec' popup will assist you in searching for the correct codec to play your file. If you didn't find any: first reason is likely to be the issue.

Fixes:

*Search Result will be shown on a new internet page. Once youve found it, simply download and install to watch the AV files.

I have a Dell Inspiron E1705 Notebook running WindowsXP with a DVD-RW/CD-RW drive. When I insert a DVD to play or to copy it won't work, it tells me I need a DVD decoder. How can I get one to solve this...

Hi,
Just download FFDShow and VLC MEDIA PLAYER.
Its extremely rare with this combination, to find a movie that wouldn't play,

get FFDShow here http://www.free-codecs.com/download_soft.php?d=5550&s=50
with ffdshow all you need to do is to run the setup file and click next repeatedly untill the setup is complete, and then just finish it, close it and its done, works on the background when movies are played.

vlc media player - http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

After you got these two installed, you should be able to play most if not all of the movies out there.

open vlc media player and then click File, dvd movie.

After inserting DVD movie I get message that it would not play in windows media player because of missing DVD decoder. I loaded all drivers off the LG disc, was there not a DVD decoder included or do I...

Windows Media Player, and many others, will not play everything, regardless of your hardware and it's supporting software.

To overcome this, I recommend a free media player such as VLC (Video Lan) which is free and has a huge amount of codecs and a multitude of other features, including the abilitiy to play most "Region Locked" movies. There are several other good free ones also such as GOM etc, but I prefer VLC due its' mutifaceted capabilities.

Mine is Sony DVD player..I insert a disc and it says "CAN NOT PLAY THE DISC" and then the player shuts off. The other DVD works fine.

HI,
Check the manuel some DVD Players do not support DVD RW or -R +R formats. When Ifirst put my burned movie in I got the message that the player cant play that format Just ignore that and advance the Video to where the movie is starting then all my burned movies played fine. My Pioneer BD 51 FD does support DVD RW +R -R formats so be sure that you can play burned DVD RW +R -R on your Sony player. I was in Wal Mart the other day and they had some DVD players on sale but on the box it said that they do not play DVD RW +R or -R Burned DVD's so be careful if you do buy another one I went to best buy and found mine. Check first it will save a lot of hassle later. This software works great but it may not play in your DVD Sony Player there is a list here of compatible DVD Players

OR

your disc is scratched or a pirated one

thank you for using fixya, rate my answer,

Replacing a cd drive

The 4600 has PowerDVD to play DVDs (You should have the software CD to install it on the 3000) DVD burning software would be Roxio/Sonic, and you should have that CD too.
If you don't have the CDs, then try download.com to download Free player software and Burning software

Play dvd movies

Its not your CPU speed that burns or Views DVD its the actual player in your computer. You may have a CD player in your computer but can it actually read DVD? can it burn DVD???. If it can then you will need the software to play it back Windows media player wont play back DVD unless you have download the updated codex for it. One of the best software players is InterVideo Win DVD.
