Question about Kenmore 66469 / 66462 / 66464 Microwave Oven

No heat I have a GE Spacemaker 1800XL (model) JVM1860BF001) which no longer heats anything. Literally one minute I boiled water in a cup then asked the microwoave to cook asparagus and it wouldn't heat. All other functions seem to operate properly (time, light, timer, fan) just no heat. Any hints as to the source of the problem and the fix?

Generally, the most common causes of a failure to heat are:

- bad door switches or door switch mounts
- loose connection at the magnetron
- problem or loose connection on the control unit circuit board
- bad magnetron or other high voltage part (such as a shorted diode)

A higher than normal buzzing noise would lead me to suspect the magnetron.

The magnetron should have a 5-year part warranty, and while GE would cover the part, you would still have to pay for labor.

Labor costs in this situation can run about $100-200, depending on whether you remove it from the wall and carry it to the shop, or if a technician comes to the home.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical safety, disassembly and troubleshooting information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel, which is very helpful when troubleshooting.

My ge microwave spacemaker profile model # JVM1860BF001 stopped while in use. Interior light, clock and timer work. Door vent opens. turntable doesn't work. Won't heat.

check the breaker, or check if the wall socket works. If there is power, then you need to take it for service. There are no user service options for microwaves as they are so dangerous for both super high voltage and also microwave emission. Some models do have a pull fuse on the rear, so check for that first.

We have a GE Spacemaker XL 1800 Microwave. There is dirt and moisture that has collected between the inside and outside glass. How can you clean this?

HELLO.

This is the solution to the cleaning issue.

1. Wipe the microwave inside and out with a soft cloth dampened with a warm, mild detergent solution. Rinse with a soft cloth dampened with plain water. Dry with a soft, dry cloth.

2. Put 2 cups of water into a 4-cup measuring cup. Place the measuring cup in the microwave, then heat on high for 5 minutes to loosen food particles that are stuck to the inside walls. Leave the measuring cup inside the microwave for 1 to 2 minutes, then remove and wipe the interior as in Step 2.

3. Remove the glass turntable and wash it in the sink with mild detergent or in the dishwasher. Handle carefully, as the turntable is breakable.

Thanks.

Tat would be a magnetron problem. The magnetron is what provides the heat

Doesnt heat up

in a microwave, there is no heating element. There are microwaves that heat up the water molecules, they make them spin fast and that's what heats things up. Running it with nothing in it, you really can tell if it's not working by that test either, again, nothing to heat up. I would put in a cup of water, set on high for 3 minutes and it should boil, if not, get a new one for the price, why mess around?

GE Spacemaker Microwave XL1400- No heat

The problem could be anything from a defective control circuit board or a burned out magnetron tube. Either fix is quite expensive and you'll have to evaluate whether you think the repair is worth the cost vs buying a new microwave.

Bear in mind that a fixed microwave is still a used microwave. So to get an apples-to-apples comparison you have to ask yourself, would I pay $XXX (substitute XXX's with actual repair cost) for my used microwave?

GE Spacemaker XL 1400

First, wipe out any excess crumbs. Then fill a microwave-safe bowl with about 1-2 cups of water. Add some lemon juice, or put in half a piece of fresh cut lemon (squeezing some juice out first) into the bowl... Microwave until the water is boiling. Then let it sit for a few minutes to let the steam penetrate the interior. Carefully remove the bowl and interior tray. Wipe down the interior with a damp cloth. Wash the tray in the sink with dish soap, dry, and then return to microwave. For the outside, spray with a kitchen cleaner and wipe with paper towels. The main idea is that the steam from the water will loosen food particles, and the lemon will add a fresh smell.
