Do you mean the little prong that sticks into the lid switch to make the lid switch funtion so that it can spin you need to order the piece that he broke off on the lid or If he is mechanically inclined have him open the top find the lid switch connection and use a jumper wire from positon 1 to positon 3 on the lid switch wire connection this makes the unit run normally whether or not the lid is open or closed if he is mechanically inclined two phillips scews in back of unit to open the head

Washer stops during normal wash cycle for a minute or more, and then continues. Would replacing the timer fix it?

If it actually goes on and finishes the cycle and that really bothers you replace it. If not leave it alone and allow a little more time to complete its cycle. The lid switch only keeps the spin cycle from going with the top open.

May be a problem with agitator gear box, open on wash cycle and use screwdriver to by pass cut off switch by pushing screwdriver down on little switch that is located where tab on lid is.If agitator is traveling at too much of a rotation that may be cause, also agitator mat be lose if you can grab and move up and down. Then remove cap on top of agitator and tighten bolt,if lose if not agitator may need to be replaced!

Washer wont go into spin mode or discharge the water

Check the lid switch or lid striker that operates the switch. lift the top lid and insert a pen or similar into the hole on the right hand side to operate the switch when in spin mode.
If not try shorting the switch temporary, the top part of the washer needs to be hinged back to gain access, to do this insert a flat blade 4" from each side at the seam with the front panel to release the clips, lid will now hinge back to give access to the internals, Isolate the supply and locate the lid switch on the underside of the top panel and remove the 2 wires and short out/ link together. test the spin cycle now should now work and also drain the machine (Draining only works when washer is spinning) If all ok obtain and install a new switch do not leave the switch shorted.
Note this switch only affects the spin and draining parts of the cycle.
Good luck

Washing machine will not spin

Could be the lid switch, to access the inside, insert a flat blade 4" from each side between the front panel and the lid to release the clips. The lid will now hinge backwards, the switch is on the underside of the lid, isolate the supply and short the switch , test the spin cycle, do not leave the switch shorted, if spin works replace the switch, if no spin could be motor or timer.

Spins out of control during spin/rinse cycle?

If it has a loud grinding noise, the pump shim is slipping up. It looks like a piece of corrigated cardboard inside the pully in the center of the underside of the tub. Use a flat screwdriver to GENTLY push it back into the pully and order a new pump as this is a temporary fix. The Atlantis is known for this, and the lid switch also. Good luck.

PS Here in SW Florida I paid $50 for the pump FYI

Will bot spin in any cycle

It's almost certainly the lid switch. When you close the lid do you hear a little click? It should be an easy fix. You could either get a new switch or just bypass it. To get to the switch and connector, you need to slide a putty knife between the top of the cabinet and the control panel to release 2 clips. The clips are about 1 inch from the left and right side of the control panel. there should be a connector under the panel with 3 pins in it. Short out the 2 that are not green and I'm sure it will spin right up. This is pretty common. Good luck

Washer will not spin

I'm having a little trouble understanding the question because of the spelling, but this sounds like a typical lid switch not making contact either by the depressor on the lit itself or the switch is broken. try depressing the switch with a screwdriver and see what happens. The lid switch will be in a little slot in the top inside where the lid closes.
