Question about Refrigerators

I have an Amana refrigerator that has had 3 compressors replaced. 1 month after the warranty had expired. Greatfully Amana honored the warranty anyway. With that being said- it seems as though yet another compresser may be going out because I've noticed that my popcycles are not frozen all the way through and my ice doesn't either. The last compressor that was replaced has been about 5 months ago. Could there be another cause for this problem?

    When they sent someone out to my home to replace the compressors- each time I demanded that a different company come because of the experiences I had previously. Wouldn't they have automatically replaced all filters and done the cleaning when they returned? At least 1 of those times?

Mybe it's the thermostat and not the compressor. try setting the fridge temp lower than normal and see if it works (normal: 37 F for fridge, 0 F for freezer)
Additionally:
Check the voltage in your house. A lower or higher than normal voltage (110-115 V if you live in USA) may damage the compressor or other parts of a fridge.
Also, check that there is enough room on the sides and back of the fridge, at least 3 inches on each side, top and back. Check if the floor underneath the fridge is dirty with lint or hair (move the fridge 3-4 ft to the front and clean the floor under the fridge). This is needed to allow for heat dissipation.

Most of the time when a compressor is replaced they also to replace the line dryerrs and the filters as well as thoroughly clean the lines to remove all the impurities that have been left behind by the damaged compressor being replaced.

If you dont have a complete cleanout and refit of all associated filters and dryers you are going to have short lived compressors!

I would suggest either getting another unit either by writing Amana and getting a prorata on your current fridge or just buying a new on outright.
The cost of repair on your own might be better spent on a new unit.

    Replacing the filters and line dryers is time consuming and expensive.

    A lot of jobbers will cut corners to save time....especially after hearing the unit

    was recently serviced.



    The line cleaning would take a lot of time. I would think that if the service was done at home in less than a days time they probably don't clean them as thoroughly as possible.



    I have taken modular refridge units in for service and been warned that they would do the repairs....but they weren't going to clean them up for the price of replacing the compressor.



    I think that since Amana has been so nice honoring the warranty maybe a prorated rebate on a new unit might not be out of reach?



    I feel your pain. I did a similar repair for girlfriend and got the same warning. They did a good job....but the unit only lasted about 2 years. Which was actually about 6 months longer than our relationship did! :-)

If the problem is with the compressor, the unit usually has a five year warranty on that item. But it may cover only the cost of the compressor and not the labor.

Check the paperwork and warranty that came with your unit and be guided accordingly.

Computer board went out. when you remove the computer it has a black mark behind it on the plastic housing. how long is the warranty on the comperssor of this refridgerator?


the compressor usually has 5 year warranty in fact the sealed sytem itself which includes the compressor .evap coil and usually the condenser coil has 5 years... the boards usually only have a 1 year parts warranty or up to a 5 year parts warranty but after the 1st year you are responsible for the labor on the board....the compressor though should be covered through amana for 5 years total cost... good luck to you....

Hello, Unfortunately the compressor likely is seized now. There are a couple of reasons that the original start device failed, 1) faulty connection. 2) poor quality part. 3) compressor was running non-stop due to other deficiencies in the unit or 4) the compressor was failing to begin with. The compressor may indeed check out ok as far as electrically ( windings ) but the mechanical component ( rotor ) has locked/seized up. You can determine whether it is the windings by checking the ohm value between common to start, common to run and run to start ( c-s, c-r, r-s ) and look for values similar to 6ohms, 3ohms, & 9ohms. Then check the start and run & common windings against the compressor casing to see if windings are shorted. In order to double check the mechanical component you'd need another hard start, ( or a test cord direct to 120vac, but that should only be done by an experienced tech ). nothing else will start it at this point obviously or you wouldn't be using a hard start already. The other unfortunate issue is this, many of these compressor's have a 10yr. parts only warranty but that was voided as soon as the 3in1 hard start was installed. In the end I'm likely not telling you anything you didn't already suspect or know in fact, but it is likely the compressor. I sympathsize, seized compressors **** ! I replaced the relay switch on my Amana fridge. I can hear it click but the compressor is not engaging. What do you think?

If you replaced the compressor start relay then if the compressor refuses to start, then it is an internal problem with the compressor.

If the start components that mount to the compressor body also include a capacitor, it could have failed as well.

If your machine does not include a capacitor, you can try what is called a 3 in 1 which is what is called a hard start kit,
But is an iffy path to follow, and may either not work at all, or for only a short time.
P.S. If the machine is under 5 years of age. Leave it alone and call your selling dealer for a warranty repair. The compressor has a 5 year warranty on it.

Just a an amana refrigerator with ice maker a month ago and you have been out 3 times already. replaced a part in the ice maker and now I have no water or ice since the part as been replace.do i need to...


It's still unser warranty, tell them you want a different one, same model?

They should honor the warranty, and do what needs to be done to fix it and make it right. They should not charge you for service calls either...the dang thing should have been working fine when you received it.

I have the same unit, same age, same problem. I'm pretty sure it's the compressor acting up. Figures, just out of warranty. Probably will end up buying a new fridge (No Amana, that's for sure!)

Hi, That clicking noise is the relay/overload trying to start the compressor. Is this under 5 years old?
They have had a lot of problem with these. I might suggest you calling Amana and inquire about the warranty.
If the warranty has expired, you can try to replace the relay kit.

Amana Side by Side Refrigerator not getting cold


amana is having some problems with their compressors locking up. if the compressor is manuactured by tecumseh then tthe compressor is mostlikely locked up and will need replacing. good news is your refrig is most likely less than years old and should be in warranty to amana..

Quick Fix?


The compressor is locking up when it gets hot. We have seen alot of this on the units with Tecumseh compressors. If it is less than 5 yrs old it should still be covered by the sealed system warranty and repaired free of charge.
If it is out of any warranty, there are "fit-all" compressor starters with start capacitors built in them that give it a little extra boost on start-up. They are called 3-in-1 or kickstart starters. This will usually buy you a few months until you can replace fridge.
If it is covered by warranty but will take a few days to get repaired, you can get by ok by unplugging fridge at night and plugging back in in the morning. This is what I tell my customers when I have to order a compressor and so far they have been able to keep from losing food.

Gazzo, You are on the right track. I've been finding a lot of compressor failures on these Amana's. It's possible that the overload and relay for the compressor failed, but Im more inclined, from what I've seen, that the compressor is the problem. The compressor is covered under warranty, parts and labor for 5 years. I would call for warranty service...Catriver...post back.
