  • Insert your memory card into your computer's reader if you have one. If not, you can purchase a multi-format USB Memory Card reader from or
  • 2 Open up 'My Computer'. You should see it under the list of available drives.
  • 3 Check its contents first to make sure that you have the right drive.
  • 4 In 'My Computer', right-click on the drive and choose 'Format'.
  • 5 Leave all the options as they are and click on 'Start'. This is a non-reversible process so make sure this is what you truly wanted to do in the first place.
  • 6 Once the process is completed, take the memory card out and insert it into your Digital Camera or any other device. Try to browse to it to make sure it works fine now.

Hi, I got a new 2.GB SD card & have transferred all files including latest maps update but a red X appears on the device. Its not running? Please help

It is possible that some hidden files on the original/internal memory have not been transferred.
    1. If you are using Windows open the directory corresponding to the internal card.
    2. In Windows explorer activate the TOOLs menu on the menu bar,
    3. Select Folder Options, then the
    4. View Tab.
    5. In the main screen that pops up, look at the tree and locate for Hidden Files and Folders,
    6. Put a check mark in the radio button that says Show hidden files
Use the explorer to visit the folder corresponding to the internal card
Point inside the folder away from any icon and press CTRL A to select All, then CTRL C to copy all the selected files and folders.
Go to the second (formatted) card and press CTRL V to paste all.
Verify that you copied everything by comparing the amount of disk space the two folders (in internal memory and in external card) occupy. Values should be very close.

My tomtom does not recognise the memory card

Try formatting the card to fat 32 in your computer , you may need an inexpensive adapter to try this as some GPS will not work with NTFS format which most memory devices come formatted in.

720 go wont let me download music onto it wont let me operate it on the computer

Have you installed an expansion memory card in the 720? Sometimes it wont let you download music because you have filled up the internal memory. You need to put music on to the separate expansion card. BUT... when connecting to the computer to update map corrections and software, if you have not selected INTERNAL MEMORY when it connects, it won't be able to find the tom tom software, so it will just think you have another external USB hardrive attached. SO... take the expansion card out of the tom tom, then connect the tom tom to the computer in the normal way - Voila, suddenly it now sees the tom tom and you can update software. But do not download any more music to the internal memory. Ultimately you will have to format the EXTERNAL expansion card to clear it of any tom tom software updates, then download ONLY MUSIC to the external card. Do not hit Update My Tom Tom while connected to the external card - only do this when connected to the internal memory.

I bought the new maps from website, and can not install

If the software crashed whilst updating, you will find that if you try to restore from a complete backup when you switch on next time it will either say you cant use the map or will just freeze, fix re format both the internal memory and the memory card, then find where tom tom home had stored the files, then using windows copy the contents from the 2 folders back into the relitive internal and external card, you will then find that you will get the mesage that you cant use the map, this is because tom tom home doesent always put the map data into the correct folder, to fix this find the licence data and the map data that has been stored on the sd card instead of the internal memory and copy it into the internal memory, before switching off press the reset button, when you switch on you should find that you have a working tom tom

I have a garmin nuvi 760, and I am trying to put mp3 files on it through an SD memory card. I have re-formatted the card 5 times, and my gps still isn't reading it. How can i fix this?

Garmin states.... The most common reason the GPS would not recognize the the audio files is the file format. The GPS will not read any file format other than the mp3 format, such as itunes (mp4) format, wave files, Windows media player files etc.... If the files will not read from from the internal memory of the GPS, the file format is the most likely cause......

Please help me fixing my gps

This problem is due to the memory card not containing the TomTom application or map. To update the application onto the memory card
    • Connect the device to your computer.
    • Open the TomTom Home application.
    • Click on 'Update My Device'.
This should then install the application onto the SD card. Alternativly, you could perform all the steps above without the SD card in the device, this will install the application onto the internal memory. Note: you may also need to install your maps, voices, etc after you updat.

    No sound on GPS

The internal memory was formatted. This is a catastrophic occurrence and the most common E-mail message I get asking for help. Look under Bugs on the Tips and Tricks page for some background. Before buying an RM360 on eBay, make sure that it comes with the original Magellan SD map card and not a blank one, and make sure that the original owner did not format it! A formatted unit will not speak or make sounds. Because the RM360 is a discontinued device, Magellan WILL NOT FIX THIS. If you want to attempt a reflash, see the Hacking page.

    Tom Tom XL

The One XL can only read from internal OR sd card...
So, if you want the device to boot from the sd card, it need system files installed on the sd card...

    So, try this:
    - BACKUP !!
    - Copy ALL content from internal memory to sd card.
    - Insert sd card, and boot the device.

It should know boot from sd card, not internal memory...
