Question about Brother HL 1240 Printer
turn printer on/off, unplug, plug in, should reset configs.
take all the paper out, put half as much back in.
check the rollers to make sure no paper or particles are stuck.
go to applications folder for your computer, dbl click printer icon for make of printer. check settings. print 'test document and clean cartridge heads', this should ensure proper printing formats.
lastly, go to web site of printer model and check site for trouble shooting if this does not work above.

Remove the toner cartridge and look at the toner "roller" on the front. Make sure you do not see the same 1/4" band on the roller where there is no toner. If you do then you have a defective toner cartridge. Do you have the machine hooked up to your PC? If so do the computer prints have the same blank line? If so then it could be something blocking the laser. This would require removing the drum/toner units and wiping the laser glass that is just above where the drum/toner cartridges sit in the machine. If the PC prints are fine then the blank line is coming from your document scanner so you would need to clean the strip glass in the document feed area.
