Thanks, do you have a recommendation for a good system/company? I have had good luck with Panasonic, mixed experiences with VTECH...and never had a Uniden.

Most dect phone system will suport up to 6 handsets. So you can start off with a simple 2 phone with no answering machine and just add as many additional handsets as desired. Thats not as cheap a way to go as buying them in one box. Phillips and Uniden both have 4 handset sets listed without the answering machine.

Having said that I wouldn;t worry too much about trying to track that model down or ordering it in. Most stores will only stock the more popular models which can mean a pretty limited selection. They may be able to special order you in the set you want if you ask them.

I would just purchase the setup with the right amount of headsets you want. Then just disable the answering machine from the menu. That would let you use your telco answering service now and if needed you can switch it back on and use it later on down the road.

I just purchased a Panasonic setup for home. I've used Uniden before that. The reason the Uniden got replaced was that the Panasonic uses standard AA batteries while the uniden has the battery packs. The Panasonics go about 12 hours on a single charge while we would be swaping out the battery packs after 3-4 hours on the Unidens. Our phone gets used 12 hrs plus a day so the Panasonic has been a real good choice for us. If we ever need to replace the batteries we can replace them with aftermarket lithiums that have even more capacity. We've used them for about a year now and the sound quality range and endurance have been fantastic. It is amazing how much noise you get on other phones from microwaves, wifi routers and other electronics. All of that disapears with these. I would reccomend looking at either a Panasonic or Uniden based on what I have experienced. There may be others as well that are as good but those two I am very familiar with.

I have lost my manual and i dont know how to record a personal message on my answering machine and how to enter the code to retrieve my messages from another phone.

From your handset, you just have to press the mute button, your phone should start telling you the time, date, ect. press the #5 key and then the #8 key and start recording your message. When finished press the # 8 key again. Hope this helps

Would like to increase number of rings before answering machine comes on.

Setting the Number of Rings (Excerpt from the Uniden Dect 1580 Phone manual

The ring time setting allows you to set the number of rings the caller hears before your answering system plays the outgoing message. You can set the ring time to answer after two, four, or six rings. If you enable the Toll Saver (TS) setting, the answering system picks up after two rings if you have new messages, and after four rings if there are
none. This way, if you make a long distance call to check your messages, you can hang up after the third ring to avoid long distance billing charges.
  1. Press Menu/Select.
  2. Select the Ans. Setup menu, and then the Ring Time submenu.
  3. Move the cursor to select a ring time (Toll Saver, 2 Times, 4 Times, or 6 Times).
  4. Press Menu/Select. You will hear a confirmation tone.
