Blank screen or vertical colored lines on monitor

Boots up sometimes, runs for awhile and then either a black screen or vertical different colored lines. It will stay this way until shut down. Sometimes it tries to restart itself but I get the same problem. Sometimes it does the black screen or vertical lines immediately on start up. I have had it three different places for repair...Help!

Any idea where the graphics card is located on the all in one gateway profile 4 and how to remove it? Gateway can't seem to walk me through the process or provide schematics.

  • Taostinese Mar 25, 2008

I appreciate any help. I had it in to several places. They all say it is not the graphics card. Best they could offer was they thought there might be a loose connection between the monitor and the motherboard?? I have no clue about any of this! Thank you for all the help shugster. Below are two sites. The second site is the computer I have. I hope you can help me.

Sounds like a graphics card failing

is it on board graphics ?

if so try a graphics card in there see if that helps it

also if you could borrow a monitor and see if that helps

its either one or the other and is a process of elimination

MONITOR HD2200. I TURN IT ON AND THE SCREEN GOES WHITE THEN A FEW VERTICAL COLOR LINES APPEARS AND AFTER A FEW SECONDS IT GOES BLACK.

Hello,

IF YOU HAVE A SOLID BLACK LINE RUNNING VERTICALLY THEN YOU HAVE A FAULTY MATRIX INVERTER. IF CENTRAL THE MAIN VERTICAL INVERTER NEEDS CHANGED. LEFT = LEFT VERTICAL INVERTER RIGHT=RIGHT.........

ANOTHER WAY TO GET THIS FAULT IS WORN OR DAMAGED RIBBON/PLASTIC GOING FROM THE SCREEN MATRIX TO THE INVERTER

Hope this will help out in solving the problem....

The vertical lines/bar are sign of bad T-CON (LCD controller driver) board is bad, it is part of the LCD panel assembly, new screen will be needed, not worth it. You may try reseating the ribbon cable at the panel.

Black screen with vertical lines through it

Could be faulty graphics chip or faulty screen. If you can hook up external monitor and picture is fine then probably faulty screen. If external monitor shows same problem the faulty graphics chip. Take to repair shop and let them have a look.

Inspiron 8500 laptop monitor; vertical lines & color bursts

It sounds to me like you are having a problem with the video card on the motherboard, I am not familiar with this model but some you can remove the video card and upgrade, some you can not.if you can upgrade you can try this
if you cannot remove the video card then a new motherboard will be required to fix this computer.
you can look on ebay for a replacement at a reasonable price or talk to your local computer service center.
hope this helps.
