Re: want to change external display
Yes I do... first question is your phone under warranty.. because if it is you void the warranty do this..
second.. do you have a USB cable? and software? You will need something like P2K Commander... set it up with MSU and you want to go to the a:/ mobile folder you will see the verizon.gif file in there DO NOT DELET that file.. you are going to replace it.. Find a file that you want to you make sure the size is 96x80.. Change its name to verizon.gif and replace it in that directory.Restart the phone and VOILA! I have an evil Smiley on my outside LCD!

If the phone you purchased was branded (i.e. it has the Verizon logo on it) it is unlikely as providers often lock these phones from using other providers. If not, you should be easily able to switch providers.
Sounds like you should take it to have it looked at. Theres something up. The verizon thing only appears when the phone is opened so there must be something out of place in it so your phone can't read when it's closed. So I really can't help you there. To set the phone calls to answer automatically go to "menu" then "call settings" under "settings & tools". Now go to "in-call setup", then "answer options" and under there you'll find the choice to change it to open to answer. Hope this helped!
Does anything show on the external display if you go to take a picture, but before you acually take it, close the phone and look on the external display as if you were taking a self-portrait?
To make fully sure, while the phone is closed, press a volume button - does anything show on the display? If so, the external display functions and it would be a setting that may have been overlooked.
Go to Menu > Settings > Initial Setup > Display Timeout
Menu > Settings > Personalise > Home Screen
I'm having the same trouble, and I've found it's because the v3 no longer recognizes the opening and closing of the phone itself. You see, when you close it, something is triggered that tells the phone to shut off the main screen and change the outer screen to the usual mode where it shows the time. You can also test this by trying to take a picture and closing the phone - the external lcd no longer doubles as a second camera display to easily take pictures of yourself.
I dropped mine into the toilet, and I'm not sure if there's anything to do but take it to a tech. Sounds and looks like a hardware problem to me.
