hi thanks for the help i may have miss guided you a little - my TV is a LE26S86BDX and not a 40 inch model - i dont know if that makes any difference
i have put the TV on after looking for damaged capasitors and turned it on - I have sound but the tartan screen stays for about 10 minutes and then everything is OK it is on now and all functions work from the remote - ever thing works - i have tried different main points as well and different arial inputs - if i turn it of and the on all is OK but if i leave it off for over an hour the problem happens again -

i can get a new power board here in the UK (about $60) and it looks really easy to replace - would this be worth trying ? - as it will be a lot cheeper than taking the set to a TV service shop (most UK repair shops will charge $200 just to look at it !!)

The pixelate pattern is usually symptom of either a signal problem or a digital video problem.

After the fault occurred the TV went in protect mode. When this happens the TV goes in standby and does not respond to controls.

First ensure that it is not a temporary problem or a problem caused by a bad cable or by the connected devices (Receiver, DVD etc).
Disconnect power and follow the troubleshooting in this article: Protect mode.

If that does not worke, then PSU, input board and main controller board must be tested.

I gave a general explanation on how to test an LCD PSU here: How to test an LCD TV or monitor PSU.

When on protection the higher voltages are shut down from the main board. Only +5V is left on to keep the TV in standby. The PSU is tested jumping its control lines to higher voltages and reading volts.
This test must be done by a trained tech.

If the PSU is working on all voltage, in your case next part that can be tested is the input board. The patterm may have been caused by an input problem. The input board has few components, and it is tested at component level. Looking for shorts, or blown components that show no continuity on the multimeter.

If the input board is fine, then the main controller board must be tested. The main controller board includes the digital video and all the control circuits. The best way to test the main controller board is by reading volts on the diagnostic pins indicated on the service manual.

The other parts comprised in the TV are Tboard, inverter and IR board. This can be tested after the rest, as this are unlikely faulty.

Here all parts for your TV.

Here service manual: Television sets SAMSUNG.

I suggest following the basic steps suggested in Protect mode. If that does not work, call the Samsung number listed on the owners manual to arrange repair.

I have a 2 year old LG LCD TV (model 42LG60) and I am having problems with the screen. I turn it on and everything is fine for a few minutes and then the screen goes to red or green lines that are fuzzy....

Not really a solution, sorry, but I've got the very same problem. I haven't noticed the time before tv faults, but nontheless, it greenscreens or like in your case, redscreens as well. I've been told to open the back, which I did to check the status of the capicitors, which I've done. But, the capacitors "seem" fine. No bulging or popped tops. So, I'm at a stand still...not sure what to do at this point. If someone gives you solution, I sure would appreciate your forwarding it on to me. Thanks. Robert
