Question about Dell Dimension XPS PC Desktop

2 Answers

I have a Dell with Windows 98 2nd Edition which starts up OK except it looks as if it is in safe mode when my desktop appears. While starting up, however, I get a message: Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows application. The windows registry or SYSTEM.INI filerefers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists. If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or setup program. If you still want to use the application associated with this device, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file. Hi mnewo1, after you finish loading windows (you might have to start Safe Mode by pressing F8 at the begining of the boot process), click on start - Run - and type "regedit" (without the qoutes). And click con Find (under edit menu) and type MCAFEE and click on search. You will find several files or access pointing to the file. Delete all the keys. **BE CAREFUL** If you dont do this carefuly you WILL damage the Windows. If you still have the same problem, check the system.ini under C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System32 - you may have to set the folder settings to view hidden files and folders ( under tools - folder options - view) but i doubt you'll find it there, bu then again, it's Windows 98. I hope this helps.
P.S: You may try an automatic registry cleaner, meaning it searchs the registry for deleted files but I dont know if supports Windows 98 - the name is Glary Utilities.

Hi

Thank you for your query

Please can try the following

1) Click Start>Run
2) type in msconfig, and then click on the startup tab
3) Remove any ticks/checks which has the mention of mcafee in there
4) click OK and then restart

This will hopefully take the error message away

Regards
shauqat

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

How do I fix blue screen in dell zino 400 desktop?

What was the last thing you installed on it? Go to safe mode and remove that instillation. Also I would suggest downloading three service programs and run them in safe mode as well
Superantispyware (free edition)
Malawarebytes (free edition
Advanced System care (free edition)

If you still get the issue then back up your data and then do a system restore.

Restart in Safe Mode and perform the defragmentation in Safe Mode.

I have a Dell Dimension 24000 that has been in storage for a year. I recently tried to boot it up so I could find a couple of files. It starts booting up; windows logo appears and shows things are loading...

try starting in safe mode.

when you power on the PC, start tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.

this will give you the option to start in safe mode and can possibly let you find out why you cannot start up.

if it does start this way, you should at least be able to retrieve the files you were looking for.

Computer won't start except to take me to a DOS-looking Dell logo. How do I start the pc in safe mode?

Have you tried pressing F8 at bootup? If no, then do it now and be led to a menu with Safe Mode as one of the options. If that does not work, then try using the "Last good boot" option.

Search the Internet for a password changer. There are several out there. One I've tried is http://www.password-changer.com/order.htm. It's a $60 hit, but worth it in my business.
