Question about Computers & Internet

2 Answers

I have a new Acer Aspire 5542 laptop running Windows 7 and have real problems with the touchpad/keyboard. I frequently get apparently completely random behaviour. eg. I will be typing an email and the text will suddendly shrink in size or I will be accessing a webpage and I will suddenly be taken to the previous page I was looking at. Any suggestions? I am not sure if it is a software problem or I am accidently triggering some kind of shortcut through certain keyboard/touch pad combinations that I dont know about.

    Is there any way I can turn these shortcuts off to see if this is the problem?

  • nick_hancock Apr 30, 2010

    I really do not think that the problem is with the shortcuts. It happens also with my hand just on the touchpad (or mouse) and nowhere near the keypad. Any other ideas?

    I did a complete scan of my computer with Kaspersky and my normal virus/spyware software. Nothing was found. Any more ideas?

What you have just explained is a short in the keyboard. If it is new I would return it to the store for a new one. There is no shortcuts that would do that in the software or with a combination of the keys. There is a problem with the keyboard it's self.

Good Luck

Most likely you are inadvertently accessing the keyboard shortcuts - in the specified cases the zoom (Ctrl+scroll or Win+(+/-)) and the back/forward commands (Alt+(←/→)).
There are a lot of new ones in 7 on which i stumble by accident on a daily basis.

    I'm afraid there is no such option to turn off all keyboard shortcuts. All you can do is to disable the Win shortcuts thru the registry following the recommended procedure as explained here

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/...
    and to make sure that you don't activate Sticky Keys do this -
     - go to Control Panel and click on Ease of Access center, and find the link for “Make the keyboard easier to use”;
     - in there make sure the boxes for “Turn on Sticky Keys” or “Turn on Filter Keys” are turned off;
     - click on both “Set up Filter Keys” or “Set up Sticky Keys”;
     - disable Filter Keys Popup and untick “Turn on Filter Keys when right SHIFT is pressed for 8 seconds”;
     - uncheck the box for “Turn on Sticky Keys when SHIFT is pressed five times”

    The only other thing that could cause that is a malware infection. Do an online scan here

Touchpad, mouse and keyboard not working

Try installing the touchpad driver from here http://www.helpjet.net/files-Acer-Aspire-4810T.html#ATouchpad
Once you are done restart your Acer and see what happens.
If this doesnt resolve the issue it may be a problem with the hardware in which case you may need a new touchpad. otherwise just use a mouse as a fix either temporarily or if it turns out to be to expensive to fix.

My Acer 5732Z running under windows 7 has a keyboard & mouse prob

First thing to try to uinstall and reinstall the software for your touchpad. Go to Acer and get the latest drivers and or software. Sometimes, just removing the driver and letting windows find it again in device manager is enough to fix it. hopes this helps.

Normally though. keyboard and touchpad are seperate entities. which made me think of the motherboard as that is the only constant between the 2 but, if your touchpad is buggy maybe it is causing issues elsewhere.

I'm not sure I understand completely the problem you are having with your Aspire. However, it seems you are having problems with keyboard, touchpad etc.

One thing I realized a few months ago, mine started going crazy. I searched the web all over and found that REMOVING the battery completely solved the problems with the keyboard and touchpad problems.

I have to use mine without the battery in. Only plugged in.

Try removing the battery, leaving it out, plugging in the power supply and see if that does not fix the craziness of the touchpad and keyboard.

Good luck!

Acer Aspire 3004 keyboard and touchpad error

Just resolved same problem on Acer Aspire 5000 by removing the battery, then goto device manager and disable "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" you can then put your existing battery back into the latop with any problems with the keyboard and touchpad. Mad solution I know but it worked for me

Keyboard/touchpad freezes when the battery is plugged!!

I SOLVE THIS ISSUE 100% WORKING
THE MAIN PROBLEM IS ON THE CONTACT BETWEEN THE BATTERY WIRES AND LAPTOP
IF YOU MOVE THE BATTERY IT WILL WORK SO SURE THE PROBLEM WITH THE LINK BETWEEN THE BATTERY AND THE LAPTOP
SOLUTION : TO MOVE THE IRON OUT OF THE LAPTOP TO THE RIGHT TILT THEM TO RIGHT SIDE A LITTLE BECAUSE THE BATTERY WIRES IS TO THE RIGHT SIDE (WATCH THEM) NOT IN THE MIDDLE AND AFTER THAT PUT A STICK ON THE BATTERY TIGHTED IN ITS PLACE SO IT WILL NOT MOVE ITS NOT FREEZING NOW THANKS
