Nikon coolpix S700 lens cover is stuck / jammed open..
A few quick ??'s I need answered first.
I take it your camera is fairly brand new - as in still under warranty?
It should be if we are talking about the newest model out.
Was it dropped or jarred hard in any way? Did you force the lens assy to retract into the body for any reason?
Are you sure the Li-ion batt pack is fully charged up and GOOD?
Is the lens assy retracting all the way inside the camera body first of all?
Does the lens assy fully extend when first turned on?
If all the above ??'s prove out to be normal or proper as to being
nothing you did wrong to the camera, and if the camera is indeed under
full factory warranty then your next option is this.
You can try this step first though - but only try it one time - if it
doesn't solve the problem then follow my last recommendation.
With the camera turned off and while holding the camera "firmly" in
hand - rotate (twist) the camera briskly in a CCW & CW motion as if
you were opening a door knob back and forth in a fast motion.
If you hear or feel anything inside making a rattling noise immediately
stop or end this procedure as possibly something has broken inside and
definitely needs factory repair/replacement.
If you don't hear anything loose or noisy inside do the same thing
again while turning ON the camera, but only do a rotate back and forth
one time and no more. If that doesn't resolve the binding lens cover
slats to close then for sure it is an internal failure and has to be
returned for either repair, replacement, or refund depending on where
you bought it from.
With camera receipt in hand return it to the camera dealer or outlet
store you bought it from - hopefully for a full refund or full
replacement camera.
If it is over the store's free replacement period then you may have to
take it into a Nikon factory authorized service center for repair. If
you bought the extended warranty - like I always do with any camera
over $100 - then the repair will be totally free.
