My XPS 200 keeps shutting down and power light blinks

My XPS 200 keeps shutting down and the power light blinks yellow. Usually happens when it gets loud (fan running max). It has also been running slow and freezes up occasionally. Called Dell and they updated BIOS but didn't help.

Thanks for the response. Yes, I opened it up when I was on the phone with Dell and no dust bunnies. They finally determined it was overheating (duh)and are replacing the power source, fans, heatsink, motherboard, and hd.

If it does it when it "gets loud" it is obviously overheating. That will cause it to do lots of things including shut down-it may also render your HDD/system inoperative.
Just out of curiosity, have you opened it up and cleaned the dust bunnies out??

Testimonial: "Right on with the diagnosis. Dell even mentioned "dust bunnies" as a possible cause."

You may have a virus, computers will run slow and shut down if there is a virus , check your memory to make sure it is sitting properly and finally have your power supply checked out it may be faulty or have a short, sometimes due to thunderstorms or power outtages.

During when does your computer shutdown? Please check the diagnostic lights at the back as well which ones have light on it during the time it would shutdown.

Since you said that the light is blinking yellow it just says that your power supply is running outside its normal operating range. So most likely you would need a change of power supply. Maybe a higher wattage would be better.

Have you checked to see if your power supply is still good, or the power supply connection to the motherboard is good?

Blinking yellow light on xps200. changed power supply. still blinking yellow

A blinking yellow light means that there is something wrong with the motherboard, if not the motherboard itself it will be either the RAM, wiring connections, bad processor or it may need a fresh coat of thermal paste on the processor itself. With Dells, its pretty easy to find out. Start the pc and You will hear some beeps count the beeps. ex:beep.beep...beep.beep which gives You a code this one being 22. Once You get the code go to Dell support and look up service code and it will tell You what the problem is. Good Luck.

My dell xps 200 shuts down and the power light flashes amber. I try turning it back on and it does not respond. I have to unplug it from the outlet wait a few seconds then plug it back in. After I do this...

You can try unplugging the PC, removing the RAM and re-seating it. It could also be a power supply issue, either too much for it to handle or it's not functioning correctly. My first suggestion would be unplugging hardware that's not needed for a week or so and see if it keeps happening with only the HDD plugged in. If it doesn't continue plug one thing in at a time until you find the culprit... although because it does run for a bit when you have the so called culprit, unplug it and plug something in its place, if it continues then you may have over powered your power supply and need to get something a bit larger.
You may also have issues with the PC over heating or fans not running correctly, make sure to check these items while your PC is turned on. (please be careful).

Dell xps 200 shuts down without warning. The powe...

Opitions:
1.) Your system may have an over heating problem
Make sure all your fans are running and not making excessive noise.

2.)You may be a victim of spyware/maleware infections. You will need to have your system cleaned. This should help resolve your issue.

I would recommend trying CCleaner first to see if this helps you. Please keep in mind this will not rid your system of everything just keep you a float and offer you a fighting chance.

Please keep me posted and updated on your issue. I am here for you and will see your issues out till resolved.

Have a great and wonderful day :)

My dell xps wont start properly, yellow blinking light

I have an HP that does close to the same thing. Mine goes into a 'Perm-Sleep' mode that I can't seem to pull it out of. I have to remove the battery, then unplug the power adapter, not in that order. Leaving it in this condition for about a minute so that all the power stored in the RAM goes away. This is the same as holding the power button down for 10 to 15 seconds until it completly turns off, sometimes referred to as a 'Cold Boot.'

Once I have powered it down I have to go into the control panel and select the power settings and make sure that hibernate is not an option. If you close the lid on the laptop and the systems goes into a sleep state, it may be configured to go to hibernate after, say an hour or when the battery gets close to being drained. My computer does not like to come out of hibernate and I have to Cold Boot it, so I just don't let it go into a hibernation in the first place anymore.

Power light blinking yellow after sitting a while

Unplug computer, disconnect all usb/monitor/internet, open it, hold power button until green led on the inside on the motherboard turns off, pop out the BIOS battery (looks like a big watch battery and use a small flathead screwdriver to depress the spring lock on one side), plug in computer, hold power button for about 20 seconds (must reset BIOS or something), let up on power button, wait 10 seconds and push power button. The computer should turn on. Wait for it until activity seems stable (1 min. or so). Push powerbutton to shut off.

If this has worked you have proven that it's not the power supply (it turned on).

Go buy a new battery (CR2032 3 volt). Unplug computer, open it, hold power button until green led on the inside on the motherboard turns off, pop in new battery, plug in (you should notice the power button blinking amber again), hold power button until it stops blinking (about 20 sec....again must reset BIOS or something), wait 10 sec., push power button. the computer should turn on. Wait for it until activity seems stabe (1 min. or so). Push powerbutton to shut off.

Now, close case, plug in all usb/monitor/internet/etc. Power up computer. You'll get an internal floppy drive error. Push F2 (maybe F1) to get into the BIOS settings and go to "drives" and turn off the internal floppy. Save and exit. The computer should boot properly now.

This seems to be a big problem with the e510, my theory is that this one small battery is the root of most of these failures (as these computers usually fail after 1-2 years), not the power supply or the motherboard (heck, when you replace the motherboard it comes with a new one of these batteries...a several hundred dollar piece of hardware, with a $5 battery that will actually fix it).

Tower Will not turn on.

Blinking yellow/amber light indicates PS not operating within specs. You can look at replacing the PS but might need to find out if something else caused the PS problem, such as other components caused the PS to overheat, etc. Were you having any problems with any of the drives? Strange noises etc?

Slow, overheating, shuts itself off

sounds like your internal fans are taking early retirement, from all the symptoms..like running a car with no oil, you don't want to run a dell desktop without internal cooling..need to replace that fan..not too hard, actually.
