Question about Refrigerators

2 Answers

My SUB-ZERO refrigerator/freezer Model 361RFD Serial P461925 installed 1984 , seems to be running almost continually. The temp on the condenser side of the upper compartment is around 80 degrees f, and the temp on the discharge near the compressor is about 100 degrees f. I am considering running an outside air duct to the condenser side of this compartment. Will this do any good? Is this an option? This unit is completely built in to my kitchen cabinets, and this problem was evident from the installation but lately seems to be getting worse. Who is your Anchorage authorized repair service? Do you think low Freon could be part of the problem. An early reply would be sincerely appreciated. Melvin J. Monsen Sr.

First could be on the freon, and secondly you have to clean the coil, there's a possiblity that the motor can't hardly operate and hardly give the right amount of cold..

Your first 2 questions... Yes and Yes. typically what your saying is since there is a difference in the temp, using a fan will balance the temp right. and by doing that, there will be equal temperature shard on both sides on the compartment.

follow up. where are you located? typically here in fixya, you can search for that Anchorage authorized repair service nearest to you. Low freon would rather be a very broad cause for the problem, but if you do suspect that its the freon, a freon reload wouldnt cost you that much.

placing an airduct will lessen the heat that is emitted but as much as posibble, you should have more than 1 airduct for that. a bigger airduct will do actually since there is a difference in the upper and lower compartments. always remember that hot air always rises. so you may place the airduct on the upper compartment.

please disregard my 1st post. YES it is the freon thats why your ref/freezer is acting up like that now.

with regards to what micromaster said, clean the coil too.

a beter idea for the airduct is 2 fans should be in place. 1 for the compressor which air is goin in... and another fan for the condeser on the upper part where the fan is sucking the air out.

this way, air can freely flow from the bottom going upwards and out of the ref. have your freon reloaded to avoid further temp rising.

Does the sub zero model 361 rfd refrigerator have a separate thermostat control for the freezer ?

No, the 361RFD does not have a separate control for the freezer as this unit has a single compressor. The control is located behind the back panel in the refrigerator compartment and the part number is 4201470.

still not clear. in your question you say refrig side is dark and not running, then you say you put a temp guage in it overnight and it's steady. So you DO have cooling in refrig? If it's just the lights, yes it could the switch or it could be the light bulbs.

Sub zero 532. freezer works fine --0 degrees. fridge wont get below 50 degrees. cleaned condenser fins- still no decrease in temp

check the fan that runs between the freezer and the fridge --check fan for ice blockage -debris-or damage / clean or clear blockage --if not running test wiring and connections as well as motor /repair or replace //also check fan damper is not frozen or blocked its flap that opens and closes for air to flow //----ur fridge side is cooled from the the freezer side the cold air is blown in from the freezer if fan or damper is not working correctly than fridge is usually warm and freezer is working properly

The control panel flashes "EC" where the fridge temp is displayed. The word "service" is also flashing.

"EC 50" means excessive refrigerator compressor run time. What is the serial number? Is the condenser fan running? Can you feel airflow from the left side up top? Is the strip between the fridge and freezer hot to the touch?

I have a 20 year old sub zero side by side model 361RFD. The compressor and condenser fan aren't running. The defrost controller appears to be making a noise and is warm.

Good day,
The defrost control on that model could well have failed. If it failed in the defrost mode, then the compressor and condenser fan motor would not run.
The timer is easy enough to remove. Take it to any appliance parts house. A good counter man if you explain the machine is not running could check the contacts that run the compressor.
If it's noisy I would replace it anyway.
If they can't cross the timer, just ask for a replacement with a timing sequence of 8 hours-30 minutes. That means it will run the machine for 8 hours, then shut it off, and defrost it for 30 minutes.

The other possibility is the cold control (thermostat which is located in the fresh food compartment.
That cold control is expensive and labor intensive to replace.
Buy it only if necessary.
However, both items are popular replacement items on your machine.

Look on your sub zero for more model numbers. I have found some information indicating that the refrigerator thermostat may be the problem but need those numbers to confirm. Thanks, Sea Breeze

Sub zero 650 fidge holding at 53 degrees

That depends on if your model has a five or ten year warranty on the compressor. Your problem may not be warranty related. Check and see if the condenser is clean, check for a frozen cooling coil.
