check the mechanism first before changing the gearbox its possible that the cable might jump out from the pulley or the cable is worn out or its possible that the gear on the tire is worn out to if not then that would be the time for you to change the gear box it would be hard to change it if you don't have the right tools to work on it if you know how everything work its not that hard to replace it just make sure were everything goes memorize the parts before disassembling cause that would be you guide to reassemble it...goodluck

SOURCE: honda push mower wont run right
I have the GVC160 motor....same problems....just found this info (see link),...and it turned out that Honda used a NGK spark plug that was defective,....I couldn't believe that is all it was...after changing the carb (new),...adjusting valves....etc.. I just went down and bought a new spark plug.....and it runs great!!
BEFORE go thru all of the advice and look at most other Honda web info.....go and buy a brand new spark plug and start with that! It appears Honda used a NGK spark plug in the past that fails after some time....giving the syptoms of problems with the carb, sticky valve, etc. Do not try to clean and use the old spark plug!! Check this out....it was the answer I was looking for after hours of work, reading, and talking to Honda dealers - http://forum.doityourself.com/outdoor-power-equipment-small-engines/261743-honda-lawnmower-starting-then-cutting-out.html

Did you leave fuel in it all winter ? If you did it probably went stale.Try draining the fuel out and replacing it with fresh fuel.If it still wont start the fuel left in it may have formed a varnish build up in the carburator and may need to be removed and cleaned. Also check for spark and a good spark plug.Hope this helps you out. Good luck.
