Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

I've been having some problem with my Samsung DLP SP-67L6HX projection tv. The color wheel has shattered recently, and as such I've ordered a replacement part + a new lamp (since the TV's approx 4.5 years old.... so thought I might as well). I've replaced the color wheel, and put everything back together, but now when I turn on the TV, the lamp light keeps blinking and after a little while (10-15 seconds or so) it goes into standby, and then tries again. The lamp does not actually turn on, and I can hear some ticking noises. I originally suspected the noise coming from the color wheel motor, but I've also read it can be the ballast.... I'm kinda lost and hoping someone can give me a hand. Btw, I have put the original lamp back in, and still getting the ticking noises.

Hi, thanks for the quick reply.

What I've also done to test whether the noise is actually coming from the color wheel (just in case if I didn't install it right) is to pull its cables out (presuming one data & the other for power) and that stops the ticking noise.

I don't know the full "boot" sequence, so that may just produce an error before the ballast even gets fired up.

Just want to run this by you in case if you've come across ticking noises generated by any other than the ballast.

Yeah, I've made sure the switch's "closed".
I just did a test right now and unplugged the ribbon cable for the color wheel, and the ticking noise goes away.
when I plugged it back in & powered back up, I sort of heard a faint noise as if its a CD spinning up, before the ticking noise starts.
I've re-inserted the color wheel once to make sure its slotted in properly, but there's no way to "test" and make sure it can spin freely...

What I've also done is to leave the color wheel completely outside of the assembly (whilst everything plugged in & assembled. After powering up the TV, the color wheel (which is left on a high stool) doesn't spin... sort of guessing there maybe other things making it spin...

Any thoughts? Its 1am my time, so by the time I read your reply, it'd be tomorrow and I'd probably reinsert that color wheel yet again just to make sure I haven't done anything silly.

The new ballast has finally arrived and after replacing... same problem... :'(
So the lamp still does not start up, the green lamp light at the front flashes and after a while turns off, and you can even hear the relay clicking off. (before it auto-starts up again).

I'm wondering whether there's any worth replacing the light engine altogether in case if when the color wheel blew up, it killed some other electronics..? On a side note, the digital board outside of the projector head has a green LED which turns on, solid, when the TV turns on.

    Any suggestions....?

Just adding a quick note, I did check the power cable connecting the power supply to the ballast and verified there are current supplied.

Hi,It seems the problem it is with the ballast. The ballast is the board that powers the lamp and it's the one who sends you the lamp message. The ballast has a sensor that it detects when lamp is not responding or when ballast is not able to provide enough power to light up,that's when you get the red lamp indicator.Usually clicking or ticking noises are it's major symptoms. Here's a video that will help you replace it : Your part # is BP47-00022A You can find it here: This is a very simple fix and less expensive than the lamp, good luck and have a bless one!

When you moved the cables from the color wheel was the door cover properly closed? The reason why I tell you this is because the door cover has a switch that it detects when it's not properly shut and if it detects that it wont let tv power on and thats why you won't hear ticking anymore.

Wow 1 am in the morning? That's super early, our time is 8 am.The main reason why I worried it was the ballast is because of the lamp indicator and attempt to light up the bub.Lamp indicator is only caused by the ballast and those attempts to light up sound like ballast is too weak to power it.Also if lamp and ballast will be ok you still will have a black and white picture with no color.I've dealt with many samsungs and know it's major symptoms.Let me know how it went with the color wheel, but don't discard the possibility of a faulty ballast.

My Samsung HLP-4667W DLP TV has no picture when I turn it on.

The color wheel can be ruled out by looking at it---it faces the lamp and can be seen---look to see if any segments of the wheel are missing or if the wheel is totally shattered.

Other than the wheel I am concerned by "blue splotches etc" as it might be a DMD gone bad. Look at the attached photo and the color wheel first.

We have a samsung DLP tv model number HLP 4663W tv. The picture went so we replaced the bulb. Still no picture and the tv makes a noise that sounds like a fan and the tv cycles on and off by itself. ...

Yes, almost certainly a bad color wheel, see attached photo.

If you remove the lamp and look in the direction it faces you should be able to see the wheel, look for it to be missing pieces or shattered.

You Tube has detailed video instructions for replacement in most of the Samsung sets; I have replaced dozens of the wheels.

Samsung DLP Facial Colors off after changing color wheel

Do you mean that red and blue are reversed? If so, you may need to remove a jumper, see end of linked article. Pinkish-yellow or orange sounds like a good description of skin tone, but perhaps too intense. If the color is too intense, can you just lower the color level with the color control? Or can you just change the tint with the tint control? Otherwise, see including the comments at the end.
