Installing a DEH-P31000 into a 97 Cavalier

Could be speaker failure, especially if direct connection didn't work.

The best way is to get an installation kit. It comes with the surround to put the new stereo in, and install where the stock stereo was. It also has a wiring harness in connect your new stereo, and a plug that will plug into the factory radio plugs.

You'll need to check that you have the yellow wire connected to constant battery, power from battery, not thru the ignition switch. The yellow wire is the power wire for the clock and radio presets.

You would need a special adapter that connects to the speaker wires of the Pioneer DEH-2000MP and converts them to line level RCA ports. Something like the image below and available from here or most car stereo stores.

you need a model specific wiring harness available at your local auto parts store, best buy, circuit city, etc...

Purchase the aftermarket wire harness at from a local installation shop. WIres will match color for color to this harness then mate to the factory connector. This could save hours attempting to figure out the factory wire harness.

you should be able to look it up at the place of purchase, stores like wal-mart have books with info for the specific vehicle, online like crutchfield will probably tell you everything you need.
