Craftsman 30" mid-engine will not fire - model # 536.270321

Less than one year old. Parked mower (running great) then 2 days later it will not fire. It turns over and can smell gas as I choke it or not, but will not fire. I've looked for loose or damaged wires on safety switches and pulled spark plug, all look good. The plug was wet with fuel. I am suspecting one of the 4 safety switches to be at fault, but not sure how to check them.

I could sure use some advice. Thanks, Bud

You need to find out if the switches are normally open or closed, that can be done with an ohm meter. Then bypass each one at a time either by just disconnecting the switch or by putting a jumper wire between the contacts (wires off switch). For example the seat kill switch is normally open while operating (no connection) it closes (makes connection) when seat is raised (rider off) and grounds the ignition to shut down the motor. Hope this helps

Usually the safety switches won't even let the engine turn over. One of two things is keeping you from getting spark. Could have a bad spark plug or the coil has went bad. Try a new spark plug first. To check for spark you can purchase a spark tester or you can remove the spark plug, ground the spark plug against the engine and turn the key and see if the plug is getting spark.

The oil that is in it, is poulan, chain, and bar 30 weight, can I drain, or flush, engine

I usually just drain the oil. Bar and chain oil is thinner than normal SAE 30. If the engine is not seized, then I would suggest using a 15W-40 oil if you are in a warm climate area. These air cooled engines get hot quickly and that will cause the oil to thin more quickly and become less effective. Using the 15W-40 may cause hard starting at lower temperatures. Depending on how long the engine ran with that oil has a lot to do with the "reliability" of the engine. If it was smoking the last time you used it, then yes the engine needs to be reworked (new rings and valve seals in particular). If it wasn't smoking, I would run it with the heavier oil until it just won't turn anymore. These little engines are pretty tough. If the mower is less than 2 years old, then I would put the manufacturer's recommended oil back in it. Don't be too concerned if all of the old oil doesn't drain. Just change it again around mid-season.

If the carb is new, then make sure the fuel is fresh- LESS THAN 30 DAYS OLD!!! Is the plug good? Air filter OK? Good oil in the engine? Make sure that the shut off cable hasn't stretched. It may make contact and shut off the engine.

Hi, check that the choke is operating and make sure the plug is wet after cranking. If so replace the sparkplug as it may be breaking down under compression. Also make sure it has compression ad it may have a stuck valve. regards Phil

My 25 horse kohler starts when I put gas in the carb, then shuts off. I have gas from the fuel pump--HELP!

first check for power going to the solenoid on the bottom of the carb its a anti backfire valve if you have power there when the key is cranking and when turned on the solenoid might just be stuck if that works maybe the gas that was left in the carb turn bad

Test for spark. Make sure the air filter is clean. Then make sure fuel is getting from the gas tank to the carb. Old rubber fuel line deteriorate and stop up small ports and parts in the carb. An inline fuel filter is a good idea on these larger engines. Sometimes, a larger B & S engine needs the OH valves adjusted to start easily and run properly. If after attempting to start, does the new plug get wet or even smell like gas? You should always use gas LESS than 30 day old. Gas goes stale like bread and milk. You can remove the fuel line from the fuel tank at the carb to drain old gas. You can also remove the carburetor bowl to check for water and sediment (which need to be cleaned out). Check these things and post back.

It should start easily, start with fresh fuel/oil, pump the primer as many times as it takes to 3/4 fill the bulb, pull the choke fully out, crank the engine until it fires once, push the choke fully in and crank again until it fires up, after re fueling a warm engine, pump the primer again until it 3/4 fills the bulb, before cranking the engine pull the choke fully out and in again( this will engage the part throttle ) then crank the engine until it fires up.

Hi you mdont say what make or model tractor you have . try disconnecting the kill switch wire directly at the engine and then try restarting it if it starts the problem is in the safety switches or ignition key or a shorted wire -- if it doesnt start and still no spark then test the coil .

I Hope this Helps Andrew A
