Question about Apple PowerBook G4 Mac Notebook
Try holding down the SHIFT key (either one) while you power on your machine. This is Safe Mode. Will it boot in safe mode?
*Disclaimer: There is a small risk of losing important files, such as your pix and music, when reinstalling the operating system (directions below). You should have backups of your important files on CDs, DVDs or an external Firewire hard drive).*
Do you have your system discs? The discs or disc that came with your computer? Or do you have an OS X disc that you bought? If so, put the disc in the drive (Hold down the mouse button and turn on your machine. That will eject any disc that might be in the machine. Then you can put the system disc in.)
Turn your PowerBook off (hold down power button for about 10 seconds until it turns off) then back on again. Hold down the C key to boot from the CD/DVD. Reinstall OS X. This will not erase your pictures, documents, music, etc. *But don't select "Erase and install" from the Options button. That would erase everything. You may have to choose the "Archive and Install" option This *won't* erase your pix, music, etc.
Reinstalling the operating system is a good way to fix problems where Macs hang when loading. I'd suggest upgrading to 10.4 if you have at least 256 Megabytes (click Apple menu, "About this Mac").
