Question about Dell Dimension 2400 PC Desktop

I am getting the following error message when updating to windows service pack 2 set up can not copy the file unires.dll. Ensure that the location below is specified correct, or change it and insert Windows service pack 2 source files in the file you specify any idea how to solve this ???

Wash the disc in warm soapy water going from inside to outer edge with a soft cloth then dry with a very soft cloth from inside to outer edge and try again.

When you try to install Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), you may receive the following error message:
An internal error occurred
After you click OK in the error message, you receive the following error message:
Service Pack 3 installation did not complete
Additionally, you may see the following errors that are logged in the C :\Windows\Svcpack.log file: 165.672: An internal error occurred.
165.672: Service Pack 3 installation did not complete.
165.672: Update.exe extended error code = 0x1ffe054f
165.672: Update.exe return code was masked to 0x643 for MSI custom action compliance

Note Throughout this article, the C :\Windows folder represents the folder where Windows XP is typically installed.
CAUSE
The errors that are mentioned in the "Symptoms" section can occur because of files that are not trusted or because of corrupted registry keys. You can verify the cause by searching for related entries in the Svcpack.log file. Specific entries will identify specific causes of the issue, as noted in the following "Cause" sections.
Cause 1
Determine whether the following entries are logged in the Svcpack.log file: 142.391: CheckVLKForBlock: LIC.dll not trust verified
142.578: Trying CheckVLKForBlock again
142.594: CheckVLKForBlock: LIC.dll not trust verified
142.594: Error: CheckVLKForBlock failed

These entries indicate that the cause of the issue is the Licdll.dll file. The Licdll.dll file may have been altered, is corrupted, or is not trusted. The Licdll.dll file is located in the following folder:
C :\Windows\System32\
Cause 2
Determine whether the following entries are logged in the Svcpack.log file: 211.890: IsSPBetaKey:pLA->lpVtbl->GetProductID Failed: 0x80004005

These entries indicate that incorrect product ID information in the registry is causing the issue.

Resolution for Cause 1
To resolve this issue, you must replace the current copy of the Licdll.dll file by using a copy from the original Windows XP media. To do this, follow these steps: 1. Insert the Windows XP CD into the CD drive.
2. Click Exit on the Setup Wizard as soon as it starts.
3. Click Start , and then click Run .
4. Copy and then paste (or type) the following command in the Open box, and then press ENTER:
explorer
5. Click My Computer .
6. Note the drive letter that contains the Windows XP CD.
7. Click Start , and then click Run .
8. Copy and then paste (or type) the following command in the Open box, and then press ENTER:
cmd
9. Type or copy and paste the following text into the Command Prompt window, and then press ENTER:
Expand CD_Drive_Letter :\i386\licdll.dl_ C :\Windows\system32\Licdll.dll
Note In the command in step 9, replace CD_Drive_Letter by using the actual drive letter for the drive that you noted in step 6.
10. To install Windows XP SP3, visit the following Microsoft Windows Update Web site:

Microsoft updates do not install

When you try to install Windows updates from the Windows Update Web site, the Microsoft Update Web site, or by using Automatic Update, you receive a message that the update is not installed successfully. Additionally, the update is not displayed in the update history.

You may experience this issue in the following scenarios:

Scenario 1 You try to install updates after repair a Windows XP installation by using the Windows XP CD.
Scenario 2 You perform the following operations before you try to install Windows updates:

You perform a new installation of Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2).
You visit the Windows Update Web site, or the Microsoft Update Web site.
Note When you visit the update Web site, the latest version of Windows Update software will be installed in your computer.
You install Windows XP Service Pack (SP3) without a restart.
You try to install Windows updates after the install of Windows XP SP3.

This issue occurs because the Wups2.dll file that is included in the latest version of Windows Update is not installed correctly.

For scenario 1, the registry entries that correspond to the Wups2.dll file are missing after the repair install of Windows XP. The release version of Windows XP does not contain the Windows Update software.

For scenario 2, the registry entries that correspond to Windows Update are changed back to the Windows XP SP2 version if you did not restart the computer before you install Windows XP SP3. The registry entries for the Wups2.dll file are changed to pointing to the Wups.dll file that is included in the release version of Windows XP SP2.
To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods;

Method 1: Download and install the Windows Update Agent,

When i tried to to install service pack 2(twice) it downloaded to 24% and stopped . With the error code 8E5E0442 windows update encountered an unknown error .


Perform the following steps to reset the Windows Update component.


1. Stop the Background Intelligent Transfer Service and the Automatic Updates service. To do this, follow these steps:

a. Click Start/All Programs/Accessories. Right click 'Command Prompt' and select 'Run As Administrator'. Click 'Continue' on the UAC prompt.

b. At the command prompt, type the following commands, and then press ENTER after each command:


net stop wuauserv
net stop bits


2. Rename the "Catroot2" folder. To do this, follow these steps:

Type the following commands, and then press Enter after each command.


net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc

3. Rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder:

Type the following command, and then press Enter.


ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old


4. Register the files that are used by Windows Update and Microsoft Update. To do this, follow these steps:

a. At the command prompt, type the following commands, press ENTER after each command, and then click OK every time that you receive a verification message:

Reboot the computer and try Windows Update again. That should get update working gain but your update status may change a bit so you may have to rerun update a few times.

The "missing or corrupt hal.dll" error displays shortly after the computer is first started. Windows XP has not yet fully loaded when this error message appears. Hello,

I have read through your comments and it looks like your Operating System (OS) is corrupted.

You can use that XP installation CD Service Pack 1 to install a new copy of Windows XP, then later upgrade to service pack 2 or 3 depending on your choice.

How ever, the errors that have been developed in your OS could simply be fixed by upgrading your service pack, to service pack 3.

If it fails to install or if it fails ti fix the errors, you will have to make a new installation of Windows XP using the CD you have, then upgrade to Service pack 2 after the installation.

Now, to install Windows XP, follow the steps below that i have provided.
How ever, i would advise you to back up all your data, on the desktop and in the My Documents folder to an external location like an empty CD,or flash drive or to a different partition, to prevent data loss.
After data backup, follow these steps to install Windows XP.

Below is the detailed procedure of installing Microsoft Windows XP:
  • Before installing Windows XP or any other operating system, you should backup all your data. Data can be backed up on a separate partition, if the hard disk is partitioned or you can back it up on external storage devices like CDs or on a network.
  • Restart the computer and go to the Setup menu by pressing F2 and change the first boot device to CD, press Esc and save settings.
  • Insert the CD labeled Microsoft Windows XP into the computer and restart the computer.
  • When the pc restarts, a message will appear telling you to press any key to boot from CD, press a key immediately the message appears and the setup process will begin.
  • After the files have been loaded, Windows will start and it will give you an option of repairing using Recovery Console by pressing “R” or continue with setup by pressing “ENTER”; press enter to continue with setup.
  • Setup will list all your disk partitions, highlight the partition where you want to install Windows, this is mainly partition “C”, press “D” to delete the partition, then press “L” to confirm.
  • Highlight the partition you deleted, and then press “C” to create a new partition, press “ENTER” to create the partition.
  • Press “ENTER” again to install Windows on the New (Raw) Partition you have created.
  • Format the partition using NTFS file system.
  • After format has completed, Windows will restart and setup will prompt you to boot from CD again. Ignore the message and let setup continue automatically.
  • Follow the next steps which will ask you to setup the system Time and Date, Network and enter a serial key, until setup finishes.
  • After setup has finished, Windows will restart and will welcome you for the first time; Microsoft Windows XP will have successfully been installed on your computer.

press start button (the one with the windows logo), then press Run.. and type "cmd" without quotes..
inside the cmd window, tpe chkdsk and wait until it finishes

Error Message after Installing Security Updates 925902 and 928843 This afternoon (April 3rd, 2007) my Automatic Updates alerted me about a couple updates I needed to install, so I did. Upon rebooting the computer though I was confronted with the following error message
"RTHDCPL.EXE - Illegal System DLL Relocation"

"The system DLL user32.dll was relocated in memory. The Application will not run properly. The relocation occurred because the DLL C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\HHCTRL.OCX occupied an address range reserved for Windows system DLLs. The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted for a new DLL."
  


Cause of Error Message

Turns out this error occurs when the Realtek HD Audio Control Panel by Realtek Semiconductor Corporation is installed. This is my built-in sound card on my computer.

The HHCTRL.OCX file that is included in the Security update 928843 and the User32.dll files that is included in Security Update 925902 have conflicting base addresses. When Windows loaded the HHCTRL.OCX file before it loads the User32.DLL file, the problem occurs.

The error occurs when the following third party programs or applications are installed on a computer with Windows XP Service Pack 2 installed.

Fatal error installing HP 3055 all in one


OK, here is my debugged/tested solution.

I know your error refers to a different installer MSI file (CIOUM32.msi) but the installation component in your log file (ipm12.A4B24390_80AD_4BAF_B8FD_C670FE0DB586) is identical to the one that was giving me trouble as well (i.e. points to the same service/file). So it is definitely worth a shot to try this solution out as it will only take a few minutes.

My Scenario:

OS: MS Windows XP SP3 [Version 5.1.2600]
Printer: HP LaserJet 3390 (AiO) (Firmware datecode: 20070331)
Printer Connection: Connected via Ethernet with a static IP address
HP Driver Version: v4.0 (hp_LJ3050-3052-3055-3390-3392_Full_Solution_AMWE.exe)

Ran into same error that everyone else is experiencing. (see below)

Now Launching=X:\hpzmsi01.exe -m dot4msi -l XXX -f X:\DIVins??.DAT
Error message received: The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2753.
X:\HPZBDI32.msi failed with return code 1603
MSIInstall() failed with 1603
Exit code=1603

After debugging HP's installation scripts for 2 days, here is the cause & solution I identified to this specific install error. Once I got passed this error, everything installed without error and all functionality was working properly (including scanning!).


BACKGROUND:

Microsoft Installer (MSI) error 1603 is simply a generic "A fatal error occurred during installation" -- see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa368542(VS.85).aspx. This is basically MSI telling you that something very bad has happened during the installation. In order to get more details, you can turn on MSI debug logging by following this MS Knowledge Base article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/223300).

The MSI error code 2753 is the code for "The File '<file name>' is not marked for installation.". This error can be triggered by many scenarios, but usually, it has to do with the actual installation script not properly checking for the existence/non-existence of an installation file and then not marking it for either installation/removal. I know this sounds confusing, and it is. If your curious about all the possible causes, just Google for "msi 2753 not marked for installation" and you'll see lots of results which you can peruse for your own enjoyment.

In order to identify what was causing these 2 errors, I enabled debugging for MSI via the aforementioned MS KB article

CAUSE:

Certain HP services (and associated DLL files) were somehow partially/improperly installed. (Possibly, from a previous failed install?)

The Windows services (files) were:

Pml Driver HPZ12 (C:\Windows\System32\HPZipm12.dll)
Net Driver HPZ12 (C:\Windows\System32\HPZinw12.dll)

The existence of these 2 files in the System32 directory was causing this error in my situation. Somehow, the installation script was not identifying that these files were already installed (or improperly installed) and failing to properly set them to be installed again.

SOLUTION:

Steps:

1) Check to make sure that the 2 Windows services above are not running (or not installed).
2) Rename/delete the 2 associated service DLL files (this will only be possible once the services are stopped)
3) Run the installation again.

If all goes well, the install should now run without any issues.


Hope this helps since many people (including myself) have spent a lot of time (and HP Support chats) trying to find a workaround for this issue.
