Question about HP Color LaserJet 4550 Printer

1 Answer

HP Color Laserjet4550

I just put in a new transfer kit. Now I have a streak across each page that looks like color is missing.

At one point the "change black toner" alert came on, but immediately turned off. The toners did not advance to the point where I could change it, and I haven't seen "low black toner," since.

I thought about changing the toner (which according to my records probably needs changing around now anyway), but don't want to waste it if this is not a fix. Please help.

I don't know how to do that. Please explain.

  • HBDesigns Mar 24, 2008

I don't know how it got in there, but there was a tiny paper clip on the roller. I haven't used paper clips that small in 5 years! I hope that didn't ruin anything! I'm running a test now.

A thousand thanks! You saved me a trip to the shop- which I can't afford. I ran a few test prints and everything's back to normal. Again--thank you so much!

"Check Color Cartridge" displays even after replacement of cartridge -though I don't think original cartridge was empty- and stops printer from printing. The new cartridge is installed properly, and...

  1. First, check your cartridges. HP cannot guarantee the quality of remanufactured or refilled cartridges.
  2. Second, make sure your paper is not causing the problem. Paper that does not accept ink well can cause your images to smear or bleed. Plain paper is not the best choice for high-density graphics. Click here to see how to pick the best paper for your project .
  3. If the paper is not the problem and you are using genuine HP cartridges, print a clean test to see if the printer and cartridges are functioning properly. Load the printer with clean, plain, white paper and print a clean test page. To see how to print a clean test page, see your printer's User's Guide , or see HP Deskjet Printers - How To Print Internal Tests , or HP All-in-One Product Family - Printing Self-Test Reports .
  4. Evaluate the clean test page. Different printers produce different pages, but you should recognize elements from the examples below on your test page. In general, cartridge and printer problems are indicated by streaks, missing colors, or wrong colors.

Run the "disable cartridge check"
It will be in the Diagnostics.
Once you start the test, you can remove all the cartridges. Put the cyan in the black cartridge slot.
print a config page. If it is all blue, you have another bad cartridge. If it prints correctly(minus the other colors)...continue
Now put the magenta in the cyan cartridge slot. Print the config page again. If you have red all over the page, you have a problem with the slot itself.
Press the STOP button and then select EXIT diagnostics. Put the cartridges back where they all go and run CALIBRATION more than once.
Select/menus/down arrow/configure devce/select configure device
Down arrow/print quality/seect print quality
Down arrow/ calibrate now. Select it and wait.

My Ricoh 3500 color printer no longer is printing in color--just greys. It does not seem to be a problem with the color cartridges. Also, it streaks from left to right across a page from light to lighter...

The streaking could be anything internal to the printer, such as the transfer belt or a drum unit. As for the lack of color, that sounds like it is a setting in the print driver that got changed from printing in color to printing in monochrome or grayscale. Look through your print driver settings to see if you can locate this setting and change it back to color. Also, once you print in color again you may notice that the streaking is a specific color, which will help to troubleshoot that issue.

It sounds like it, but before you replace it you might want to troubleshoot this through the HP Toolbox (the software would have come with the printer) if you haven't got it, download it from www.hp.com (it's straight forward and easy to use)

Printer prints a line across the paper around three inch from the left hand side of the page.

Check your Toner Carts.
Is the line a certain color?
Black perhaps?

Lift the door of the toner cart.
If you see a streak on your toner drum, you will see a streak on your paperwork.

Look at your fuser as well.
Is there a problem with the big orange roller?
BEWARE! Don't touch the fuser roller its EXTREMELY HOT!
Let the printer cool down before inspecting.
