Windows xp backup utility

1st possible solution: Check your hard drive(s) and partitions for errors. You can do this by going to My Computer > right click on a drive > Properties > 'Tools' tab > Check Disk or Check Now
2nd possible solution: You may have backed up your files from an NTFS system and are trying to restore to a FAT32 system. If so, convert your computer to NTFS by right clicking on 'My Computer' > Manage > Storage > Disk Management> Right click on your primary drive > and select convert to NTFS.

Not finding the product key, and not sure if it was given to me .

If you are trying to recover a key of an already installed program on your computer there are freeware keyfinders on the internet

http://download.cnet.com/%7Bvalue=http://www.download.com/keyfinder-thing/3000-2094_4-10491989.html

Finding lost application install keys is quick and simple with this handy executable, a complete rewrite of a well-received earlier version. Keyfinder Thing's simple, easy-to-understand interface has Wizard-like efficiency. This application quickly scans your system registry for 90 supported software titles and displays product names and icons in the result window. Single-button clicks copy all keys to either a text or HTML file.

http://download.cnet.com/product-key-finder/3000-2094_4-10694022.html Product Key Finder is a single function utility that executes in a GUI, but displays a Command window result. You merely double-click it to display the 25 character Microsoft Windows Product Key.

then store it away for safe keeping not on your computer

you should not need to buy any software to back your data on a hard drive

Determine how much space you need.

The first step in backing up your hard drive is to figure out how much space you will need to back up all of your files.

You can do this in a couple of ways.

Find out how large the hard drive is on your computer first to see if you can back up the whole thing. Click on "My Computer," right-click the "C" drive and select "Properties."

This shows the approximate size of your hard drive, how much space is actually taken, plus the space used by your operating system.

If your hard drive size is manageable (the space actually taken), back up the whole thing.

Your second option is to create a file called "Backup" and copy all of your important files into it.

Right-click on the folder once everything is copied over and choose "Properties" to find out the size of the folder.

This is how much space you will need to back up your important files only.

Choose a backup method. Choose either an external hard drive, data disks (CDs, for example) or use an online backup service.

There are advantages and disadvantages to all.

An external drive is convenient because you can plug it into other computers and immediately transfer or copy files without needing the Internet or having to worry at all about security.

However you have to carry the drive with you and always face the remote possibility that both your computer and the hard drive would break.

Data disks provide the same advantages and disadvantages as external hard drives: portability, but the possibility of theft or breakage.

You can also use an online backup service.

These services range in price depending on the amount of storage.

The advantage of an online service is that you can access your files from anywhere there is Internet, and it is generally cheaper, especially for small amounts of service.

Also, you don't need to carry or store another piece of equipment.

The disadvantage is your backup is stored on the service's external server, so security is a potential issue.

Back up your files. Once you have chosen your method of backup, do not forget the most important step: back up your files.

For external media, go into "My Computer" and double-click the "C" drive to open it.

Select all the files if backing up your entire hard drive, or select your "Backup" folder if just backing up your important files.

Holding your "CTRL" key, drag your selected files to your back up source, either your external hard drive or data disk drive.

Release your mouse button and "CTRL" key and allow the files to be copied onto your backup media.

hope this helps

you need to create a backup disk for all your files you want to save. and that usually happens when doing a recovery. usually you need to do some sory of windows registery fixer and then run a scan/system fixer. start, , programs, accessories, system tools, disk defragmenter. then do a disk cleanup and clear cookies n stuff from internet browser by pressing tools, internet options, erase history, cookies, offline files, temp files, etc. (in internet browser)

Here is what LaCie suggests about this issue:- first backup any data you have copied on Wireless Space. You can also backup your configuration: from "configuration" tab of "Support" widget, click "save" button next to "Configuration file", it will download a backup file.
- still in "configuration" tab of "Support" widget, tick the third box labeled "Restore device to factory state (data erased)", or any equivalent quote in selected language, and click apply
- the device will reboot, rebuild hard drive image, then reboot on default state. The issue is definitively fixed
- it is recommended to apply latest update downloaded from LaCie website
- you can restore previous configuration in "configuration" tab of "Support" widget, click restore and select previously downloaded backup file

If you have lost windows password, the best thing for you is creating a password reset disk.Actually, when you add a password to your pc,the first thing you should do is creating a disk in case you lost the password. But how to make a password reset disk after you have lost the password ? Follow these
You need to prepare:
1:A blank CD/DVD or USB flash drive
2.A computer which can link to internet
3.A program called Windows Password Key
Then let's begin
Step 1.Login to a PC which can link to internet,Download and install the program from in that PC
Step 2.Run the program and burn to CD/DVD OR USB flash drive
Step 3.Turn to your locked PC,insert the newly create CD or USB to your drive.Reboot the Computer and then follow the instructions,it is very easy to use.

The hard disk is defective and must be replaced. Only then you should reinstall, using the backup disks that you must have created before that. If you don't have the restore disk you must order it from them, and unfortunately pay for it.

Hi alizae68,

It sounds like your Windows files are corrupt. My suggestion is to use your recovery disk if you have one, if not use your OS disk and repair windows. They way you repair is to put the disk into the CDROM, and when the computer asks if you want to boot to the CD press any key, Press a Key! Then Window will load certain files, and do it's thing. Go past the request for acceptance using the F8 function key, and then it will look to see if you have an existing Windows program, at that point you can choose to repair the existing windows, Don;t install new or it will create a new location to install to. It won't erase your files. From XP SP2 on windows always creates a backup folder of the old or original OS and stores it for you to access.

After it repairs your system, it will reboot and you should be fine.

Good Luck

Corrupt File System

Well i guess that either your file system is corrupt or your disk is formatted into a filesystem that it's not supported by the backup programs. I don't really know what filesystem is your disk formatted into but usually the FAT32 and FAT16 are the most failsafe file systems for Windows.
So copy/paste the data you don't want to loose and then go to
My computer -> right click on the drive icon -> format and then choose fat 32. Then try backing up your laptop again.
