Providing the housing did not crack which is faily common you going to have to disassmble and inspect. Hopefully the seal is just in need of replacement.

When did it last start and run well? Check for fouled spark plug. Ensure that ALL electrical contacts are CLEAN and TIGHT. Check fuel/oil mix for proper proportion and freshness.

Water gets in your engine through the exhaust with the boat speed! Lift that engine when not in use!

Suzuki outboard motor

Unfortunately for you, the motor is out of warranty and lower units are not supposed to be cracked under any circumstances other than striking very hard some underwater obstruction. IF water was present when the motor was put away last winter, it would have frozen, expanding in the confinement of the gear housing and causing the metal casing to CRACK. Water WILL then be able to intrude the gear casing and mix with the lube oil in the lower unit leading to a breakdown if you run it without having it replaced. Get it serviced as soon as possible or, at least, get a service estimate without using it further or you'll experience a catastrophic gear failure in the lower unit and find yourself defintely looking for a new motor.

What type of oil for a 90 horsepower 1998 engine for a boat?

The outboard leg/transom leg oil is most important, where the gears drive the propeller it will need a heavy oil like hypoid gear oil No. 90. If it is a four cycle motor which doesn't need to have oil mixed with the gas, the base of the motor will have an oil plug and dipstick, and most likely take a high performance oil which acts as a coolant as well as a lube oil, so keep it right on but not over the full mark to avoid deadly engine heat.
If it is a Two-cycle motor you will need a 2cycle oil to mix with the gas according to that engine's particular mix strength on the instructions. Some are automatic oilers - 2cycle injection so you just keep the 2cycle oil tank full. You need to find a sticker on the motor or brochure to get the right oil weight and weather it can take the new multi-weight synthetic oils or not. Also oil the cables and steering pivots and all joints after you take it out of salt water and do your routine flush-out for the leg coolant water system with a hose - the coolant pump in the leg is not rust proof at all, even for fresh water boating.

What is the correct fuel/oil mix for evinrude 4hp ?

the proper mix is 50 to 1 or 16 oz to every 6 gallons,in my little boat I put 4 quarts in the 48 gal tank and its been running for 22 years, your running way to rich and your plug is probaly fouled, take it out clean it up/dump your fuel and mix it right, thats a great motor you got,I hunted with it for years,oh yeah when you get started run it till all the smoke is gone or you will have carb problems ,if you dont have them all ready,a little carb cleaner wont hurt but get it running first,or all that trash will foul you out, have a great trip bartriley1
