Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

My television is well over ten years old, so by that factor yes it's going to have issues, but as of recently any time I go above a 30% brightness the tv flickers off and on off and on and it then shuts down completely. Sometimes it turns back on and has no problem for 2 to 3 hours at a time, then it starts up. I currently do not have the money to repair the set, which should also let you know that I don't have the money to replace it. Is there some simple solution to be able to adjust the brightness so that it doesn't happen anymore? or am I just gonna have to buy a new one?

I suggest buying new bulb/bulbs as when they wear out they dont fail but do what you mention. If that costs too much replace the unit when you can.

We have a 27 inch RCA TV Entertainment Plus PIP. We have sound but no picture. The unit is about 10 years old.

The tv has lasted ten years which is better than average, I find fixing anything after that time is not cost effective and the likely hood of additional breakdowns is extremely high, because you are dealing with parts that are ten years old. But to address your problem, when you first turn on the tv can you hear high voltage been generated, if yes! you have a video problem, If no! you have a high voltage issue that will involve the high voltage transformer and other parts tied into the horizontal output circuits. A tv technician is recommended to address the situation and I advise an estimate.

Backlighting issues on tv set (I think). Screen goes extremely dark after about 30 min. of viewing. Does not return to orginial brightness unless unit is left off for a long period of time

Lcd tv sets are lit by small glass florescent tubes called cold cathodes and, are powered by: ballasts called inverters... these go out just like your office florescent lighting the parts can be purchased online from electronic parts houses and, are easily replaced

Picture takes a while to come on

Replace the TV. The average lifespan of direct view CRT based TVs is 8-10 years. Take a leap into the 21st century and pick out a nice flat panel LCD. Take the old RCA attach a rope to it and bring it along on your next fishing trip and use it as an anchor.

Picture is dark

Does not seem like a bad tube alone. Could also be that the Video output Transistors Supply Filter capacitor having dried out. It is a 100mfd 160V capacitor, which on replacement will improve the brightness of the immage. And yes, you could also try increasing the heater voltage (Filament Voltage)of the Pictuire tube, this will definitely increase brightness, but will reduce the life of the Picture tube. You gotta think - 10 year old TV, should I repair or exchange and get a new one???
