Question about Amana Refrigerators

Open Question

Where is the compressor motor capacitor located

I have an Amana refrigerator model TC18MBW, perhaps 25 years old that no longer cools. The fan hums, there is a click-clack sound (I assume this is the motor relay trying to start the compressor). This sound is heard about every thirty seconds. Normally the compressor starts up with a distinctive deeper hum. It is not kicking in. I have been advised the motor capacitor may have failed (a better failure than total failure of the compressor itself). I anm willing to try replacing this part but can't locate it. Can you tell me where it is located. I've openned the rear access panel, the compressor is to the right (a black object roughly the size and shape of a gallon paint can. The fan is about 6 inches to the left. I have seen on a parts website what was labeled as the capacitor (a black box roughly 2.5"x1.5"). I can't quite see it.

It looks like the Capacitor Start Relay is failing.  It is located either on the starter Relay or mounted on the side of the compressor compartment.  It sould have two wires on it, one orange and the other probably white.

SOURCE: Frig. is 5 years old - Not cooling - Buzzing clicking sound

Sounds like the compressor or start relay have went out.
For any recall info you would need to give the full model and serial to the Maytag.

SOURCE: Bad capacitor/relay or compressor?

that is most likely a relay. Does the unit get cold while running?

If the freezer is not freezing. I am guessing that the refrigerator is not cold also. Here is link to an Amana Refrigerator Not Freezing. You will need to narrow down parts that are working and are not working. I would first pull the refrigerator out to make sure that the compressor and the condenser fan are running(the condencer fan motor runs to cool the compressor down). This is a link to a GE refrigerator condenser fan motor problem. The compressor and condenser fan motor are in the same place. This can give an idea at least where it is at. Make sure that the evaporator fan motor in the freezer is running also. Make sure that the rear freezer wall is not iced over. This can be a defrost problem. See what a defrost problem is HERE. If your unit is sitting there with the lights on but you hear no noise from any fan motor or your compressor. Your unit may be in a defrost mode. Locate your defrost timer. It looks as tho it is either located in the front behind the kick plate or in the back by the compressor. Here is a link to your units diagrams http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/Amana-Parts/Refrigerator-Parts/Model-SQD23VW-P1315302WW/1268/0165000/P9060266/00011?componentDescription=&brandDescription=&searchTerm= or http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/Amana-Parts/Refrigerator-Parts/Model-SQD23VWP1315302WW/1268/0165000?searchedModel=sqd23vw&blt=11 . I have been doing refrigeration for over 30 years and I have never seen a compressor with a chip inside of it. Have you tried cleaning the condensor coils? I almost sounds like you have a weak start capacitor. Let me know if i can help you any futher.

I have an Amana Side by side ARS266KBW. Air is blowing, but it is not cool. I hear a click as if the compressor is trying to turn on, but hear nothing after that.

If the refrigerator isn't cool, you need to answer some questions, then see if the compressor is running.

First, answer these questions: Is the refrigerator completely dead? If so, see “It's stopped completely.” Is the thermostat knob turned to the proper setting? If not, reset it.

Next, see if the compressor motor is running The compressor is a football-sized case with no apparent moving parts. It's on the outside of the refrigerator at the back near the bottom. If it is humming or making a continuous noise and your refrigerator is still not cooling, there may be a more serious problem with one or more of several different components, we recommend contacting a qualified appliance repair technician for further help. If the compressor is not running but you do have power to the refrigerator, there may be a problem with one or more of these:

The compressor The Thermostat The overload, relay, or capacitor The defrost timer The condenser fan motor

My model ACD2234HRQ is approx 90 days out of

you need to replace the rtc overload contactor located on the compressor body, there is also a run capacitor on the contactor, replace this along with the rtc contactor, this is your problem, the contactor and overload give the compressor starting power and run power to the windings,if the capacitor is bad it doesnt have enough torque to overcome the power to turn the compressor initially

It sounds like your evaporator fan motor, they last about 4-5 years. Try to see if the buzzing noise comes from the motor, usually in the freezer compartment behind a vented cover plate

The freezer is usually cooled by the compressor, the fridge is then cooled by an evaporator fan motor ($30). If this fan seizes or slows down then the fridge warms up (it sometimes starts squealing before this happens). It could be that your drain hose is clogged or frozen. Maybe the temperature adjuster go bumped.

If you think it is the evaporator fan motor:
Check to be sure you can get a replacement fan first, they last about 4 - 5 years. Can get from a parts supplier or electric motor company.
UNPLUG fridge. Located usually in top of freezer behind a vented cover plate. Remove cover, remove screws holding fan in, may have to cut wires. Replace with new motor, make sure the fan pushes air into the freezer area and doesn't spin backward drawing air from the freezer area.

Amana Fridge that won't keep cooling.

Inside your refrigerator fresh food compartment and behind the control panel is a Adaptive Defrost Board this could be the problem or the start relay and start capacitor located on the compressor. I would unplug and examine the defrost board first to see if it looks abnormal. Second I would replace the parts mentioned at the compressor if the Adaptive Defrost Board looks ok. Below is a link that you enter your model number in the model parts search feature. The part number for the Adaptive Defrost is 611005988
Let me know, Thanks, Sea Breeze
