Hi, have you checked running the monitor on all the outputs? dvi? vga? flickering is caused most times by bad connections either in the video cable, or on the video board, or power board inside the monitor. i know those monitors pretty well, i'm willing to bet if you opened up the monitor and looked at the power supply board, you would probably find worn/blown capacitors. this could very well account for the flickering. electrolytic capacitors store power for parts of the circuit that require lots of power to run. when they go bad(overheat) they pop up at the top, sometimes leak a little fluid. they are replaceable, need to be soldered in, and you can find them at most electronic stores abundantly, but you should check everything else first, the video cables(dvi, vga) before opening the monitor.

Everything is a little squashed!

You need to change the monitor type. If you open the display settings and then setting tab-advanced-monitor you see a properties button. Click that and then the driver tab on the new window. What you need to do is go to Acers website und get the "INF" or driver file for your monitor. download and save this file. Then go back to the drivers window and click the reinstall drivers button and then point it towards the file you downloaded. This file lets windows know what settings the monitor can use. After that is installed and you go back to the settings window you should find that the allowed display resolutions have changed. You should be able to change it to one the monitor displays properly now.

My Acer AL1716W monitor flickers, but only when I'm on the internet.

flickering monitors normally mean the lamp is on its way out but this sounds like your PC has issues either with the graphics card or memory. Run a virus check and antispyware software. If you don't have this software try microsoft security essentials its free. and people tell me its good.
Also try changing graphics card settings like resolution and refresh rate changes it might have something to do with colour schemes. Update graphics card drivers and I recently had a similar issue and had to upgrade the graphics card to handle the resolution of my monitor

I have a x223w monitor that if you try to set higher than1280 x 768 it stretches eveything horizontally

Does your video-card allow you to set a resolution of 1680 by 1050?
(This is exactly 16 pixels horizontally for each 10 pixels vertically.)
This is the "native" resolution of the X223W monitor.

If not, pick a supported resolution that keeps the 16-to-10 ratio.

Refresh rate problem

It depends on your monitor. Some monitors don't support higher frequencies at higher resolutions. I wouldn't try to force it very much, as your monitor has built-in protection designed to stop it from operating at a higher frequency than it's capable. If you did find a way to work around that, you're likely to blow the monitor.

I just bought an X223W Acer LCD monitor. The texts appear blurred on the screen. What adjustment do I need to make it sharp? Thanks.

You probably need to up the screen resolution.
Start/Control Panel/Display/Settings tab/Screen resolution.
1024X768 minimum.
While you are in the click the advanced button then click the monitor tab. Your refresh rate will most likely by 60 Hertz. Down below that you will see a "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display" check box. Check it. Now click the drop down arrow for the screen refresh rate. Set this to the highest setting there. This will stop the flicker that gives a lot of people headaches when they spend a long time at their computer.
