Question about Garden

1 Answer

I got my compressor apart as you suggested. I found the "hissing" air leak. There is a hollow "hole" on top of the head the air is coming out of - but when I look down into the hole it seems like it is cast as one piece and air shouldn't be coming out. If I turn the head over, I can't see how the air is getting to the hole, or how it is escaping out of the hole. It looks like a solid cast. Could there be a hairline crack I can't see, or a gasket leak? I don't normally have a problem repairing anything on my own, but this has got my goat. Thanks

When I took the head off, could not see a crack, but when I put a flashlight at the "hole"and looked from the other side of the head, I found a small pin hole in the casting.

I will go to Sears parts today for a new head, checking to make sure it has no "hole" in the casting.

    Thanks again

I took mine apart to see if it has a hole on the head also. I did not see one. There can be many things wrong if yours has a hole. It can be a crack you can not see also it could be the gaskets that are bad. Hard to say with out seeing it in person.

Hollow hissing sound from engine/transmission.

this sounds like a vacume leak either from a hose thats cracked or has a hole in it or a hose that may have come off its port.it could also be an intake gasket that is leaking to the outside of the motor.i have had a frost plug that has come out of the intake that is there to plug a manufactured port that is not being used(this usually causes a worse problem) even one that has corroded a small hole in it.

If it is a head gasket leak and no gasket available. I would make one. You will need to buy a piece of high temp gasket material like garlock and it needs to be the correct thickness as the old material/gasket. Remove the old gasket and trace out a new one and cut it out. Or you can locate 2 bolt holes one on each side of the head put 2 holes in the material and use the bolts to hold it in place. Use a small hammer and tap around the edges. If done correctly while tapping it will cut the material. you can do bolt holes, the complete gasket like this.

Air conditioner isn't blowing cold! Fan works okay but air isn't cool. Can hear hissing sound that sounds like normal compressor function. Do I need a coolant recharge?

You will need the condenser coils repaired before you can charge it. These come from the factory sealed and they should not ever need a charge unless you have a leak. The hissing sound is more likely air in the system being pumped by the comressor and it is coming out a hole in the coils.

first you have a reciprocating pump and the hissing you ear probably comes from the unloading valve on the pressure switch(it will look like a bike tire valve)if there is air coming out the valve when the compressor is off it probably means you have a bad check valve. This valve is use to unload the pressure inside the pump for an easy start .a motor always drive more amps on start up if you cant unload this pressure you will trip the overload(you probably have a reset button on your motor)check the specs on your pressure relief valve ,its a small pump maybe its just adjusted to high.in this case your pressure relief valve will open .If the pressure is fine and there is air coming out the relief valve then you have to replace it!to adjust your pressure turn the screw on your pressure switch clockwise to increase and counterclockwise to decrease .usually you have a 30 psi between cut-in and cut-off called the pressure differential. It can be adjusted on some pressure switch.be sure you put some teflon tape on the treads if you replace something to avoid air leaks.hopes this help!

I have a pancake compressor that won't hold air pressure, leaks out of the small hole in the head. I have replaced the head gasket and air pressure valuve and still leaks out of the hole in the top head.

If you replaced the head gasket then its probably the valve plate and gasket.

AIR PRESSURE PROBLEM

The issue suggests that the head gasket is blown between the two cylinders or the reed valves are not seating or broken. The only other condition that would cause this is a leak. Here are a couple of simple tests. For leak spray soapy water on all connections and fittngs including the pressure regulator and the bottom of the pressure switch while unit is running. Repair as needed. If no leak is found, run compressor untill it reaches 60 or stops increasing and feel for suction at the air filter intake. The best way to check for suction is to remove the air filter and feel for suction at intake port-hole. The suction should be very strong. When valves are leaking it almost feels that the air is blowing out thru intake. If little or no suction, remove head and valveplate and replace parts as needed. Parts are available at www.chpower.com or www.toolpartsdirect.com. Good luck and post again if you have other question.

Maybe your unloader valve is stuck or damaged. This is found in the switch assembly and if it is faulty you should be able to hear a constant hissing noise from the switch .
