wow; thanks for responding so soon..wasnt sure if i would get feedback...i actually have not installed anything recently...back in january the computer would just randomly freeze up when starting up, when on would act very unstable, sometimes the usb drives would go in and out or stop working altogether until i disconnected and reconnected the device such as portable hard drive, flash drive, camera, etc...started taking an extremely long time loading when i reboot the computer..at times would freeze on xp screen that comes on before you get to the login screen...finally attempted to reinstall os which would freeze, recently deleted hard drive partition since i got msgs that hard drive was corrupt but computer freezes in the middle of reformatting..sometimes if i try quick format/install it goes for a while and then gives msg that hard drive is corrupt or not connected properly

No problem, once and awhile I just cruise around on here. You can narrow the problems down by either replacing the ram/hardrive/expansion cards/cpu with known working parts, or putting the parts into another working cpu untill it stops working. My guess would first be to try removing the hard drive. Once you get a working combination, add the parts in untill you find a the issue component. If the problem persists, your looking at a bad harddrive controller or hard drive, that undermines your entire system's stability. If I am right your working with a socket A motherboard and thats pretty old so I wouldnt be suprised if it may be quitting.

Missing or corrupted system 32 wont install off windows xp disk

try going to the bios and change the boot sequence for hard drive to cd
put the copy of xp in the external hard drive and reboot the computer
when it powers up it should boot up off the external hard drive
if that works go to computer --device manager and find recovery section
you may also go restore to a previous date and try for a fix from there
go google and get to microsoft and find that file download for xp and install it
if all that works shut the computer down and reboot back to bios and change back to reboot from hard drive
remove the disc from the external hard drive

sounds lile your Windows operating system or hard drive has become corrupted or damaged. Try to repair Windows or reinstall it using an external optical drive and your Windows CD or restore/recovery CD. If might also be necessary to fully reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows. If that still fails, it might indicate a failing hard drive

Hp pavilion freezes at startup

Will it start in SAFE mode? Reboot and press F8 before Windows loads. This will give a small menu about different SAFE modes and Normal mode. Select SAFE mode and allow system to start. If the system starts fine then you have corrupted drivers and/or a virus which is corrupting your drivers. Download AVGFREE.exe, MALWAREBYTES.exe and SUPERANTISPYWARE.exe and run these. Now goto START, Run and type SFC/scannow and have your original disks handy because any corrupted drivers will have to be replaced. Now try to reboot into NORMAL mode. If OK you're done. If not OK or even in SAFE mode all you see is the cursor then the laptop needs to go to a reputable repair person or check my website www.micromendllc.com

Laptop won't boot up.

You don't need dos prompt to format the HDD. You said you already tried to reinstall XP so I would assume you have a Windows XP boot disk. During the initial start up of the Windows XP installation from the CD you should be prompted with an option to format and/or re partition your hard drive.
Firstly however you should check in BIOS if you have an option under boot to "Try other boot devices" and if it is enabled plus make sure your HDD is set to the first position of boot order.
If you have any USB drivers plugged in disconnect them and try again.
If all this is to no avail your HDD or motherboard might be damaged. Try and replace the HDD see if that works.

Hope any of these help.

Looks like your hard drive has got corrupted. Try installing yor hard disk as slave to another computer and then run checkdisc and scandisk, if scandisk can rectify it, good then you can load it on your PC too. If the Hard disk does not het repaired by that or by using NORTON SYSTEM WORKS 2004, which has the ability to correct logical bad sectors. Otherwise its physically damaged, better to replace it..........sodeep

there are multiple reasons for this

1. hard drive failure
solution: replace hard drive reinstall operateing system

2. computer is not set to start from hard drive
solution: enter bios and set computer to start up from hard drive

3. Hard drive not detected or cable loose.
solution: check are the hard drive cables connected well. try disconnecting and then reconnecting.

4. Hard drive file system corrupted and unable to find start up files
solution: you can use the windows xp to enter repair console and try to correct the corruption with chkdsk command if that doesnt work you have to reinstall operateing system
