Strange looking colorful looking lines ran across my desktop last night and today the monitor is blank even though the power is on. I ran an LCD test but that didn't seem to help. Advice?

Black screen on a laptop
most likely your video card went out it happens when overheated or dropped, if it is a laptop the video card is embedded on motherboard, not an easy task for a regular guy, you need to take it to a place where they have a rework station only. They would have to unsolder video card (about 50 pins at the same time) and install a new one (same way) I know I use to do it for about 200 and it takes about 30 mins after laptop is completely disassembled plus the time to put it back together, the hard part may be finding the replacement. In several places they just apply heat to the card and it may work for a few days or months but after a while it will fail again... be aware
if it works for you remember to rate me
thx

Either a LCD that has gone bad or the video inverter is gone. Try hooking unit up to external monitor and run the system diagnostics that is in the BIOS setup.

HI dietrying321 if you had colorful looking lines across (probably vert.) it means that your screen is bad physically. So you have to get it replaced. What you can do in the meantime is connect another monitor to your laptop and once you connect it press FN (function key) + prob F8 (the one that says CRT/LCD) twice (twice JUST the F8 while keeping the FN pressed) and you will be able to see your laptop on the external monitor. I hope this helps.

Have thin line of picture on right side of screen, rest is blank. Sound is fine

Hi,

If your LCD TV or monitor has stopped working, or is displaying one of the following symptoms, then it's a candidate for some new capacitors
- Flickering screen
- Screen image disappears after several seconds
- Dim screen
- Slow start
- Power LED on, but no picture
- Unusual colors and/or lines
The primary cause of LCD TV and monitor failure is caused by faulty capacitors. You can examine the capacitors in your LCD TV or monitor and actually see if they are bad.
If they appear bulged on top, then they need to be replaced.
New capacitors will solve a host of problems in LCD monitors and TV's and will extend the life of your monitor or TV by several years.
Check the cables, connectors and connections.
Take it to a repair shop.

Va912b first cuts on with mostly blank but with broken strips of lines from top to bottom and have some together and some with blank seperation between them. then goes blank

joaye, First place to look would be the monitor's "switch-mode-power-supply" and /or the INVERTER circuit. When strange things start to occur with LCD monitor's w/CCFL backlighting, the first place to look would be the internal or external SMPS for the unit. You should be careful in your third use of the word "BLANK". Some monitors will be BLACK and not BLANK! Some will be both BLACK and BLANK. Read more Black screen stuff in my profile and you will understand WHY your unit is behaving like it is and some useful options you and other's like you have. Also visit www.ccl-la.com/badcaps.htm and www.lcdparts.com or YOUTUBE for videos on lcd repair or lcd monitor disassembly FYI DIY type stuff. I'm 12fixlouie on fixya.

Colored vertical lines on monitor

Have you unplugged the power cord to the LCD? Let it sit for a minute, then try it. ALWAYS buy a UPS and plug any computer devices into it. Doesn't have to be big, a $50 unit will protect it from dangerous voltage surges.

Blank screen on my laptop but power button is on.

Depending on what kind of laptop you have, your button may look different. Look at the Function keys (all those keys up at the top that have F's in front of them) and see if there is another colored symbol on any of them. You should find a colored symbol that looks like a rectangular monitor.

Press another key toward the bottom of your keyboard that probably says "Fn" or some other kind of "Function" key - not Alt, Ctrl, or Shift. Hold that Fn key down while you press the first key you found that looks like a monitor. That will change your laptop video output mode between several different modes like: laptop LCD panel only; LCD panel and external monitor; and external monitor only.

The purpose of this is if you wanted to plug another monitor into the back of your laptop, or a projector for a meeting or presentation, etc.

Inspiron 8500 laptop monitor; vertical lines & color bursts

It sounds to me like you are having a problem with the video card on the motherboard, I am not familiar with this model but some you can remove the video card and upgrade, some you can not.if you can upgrade you can try this
if you cannot remove the video card then a new motherboard will be required to fix this computer.
you can look on ebay for a replacement at a reasonable price or talk to your local computer service center.
hope this helps.

Mag innovision LT716s monitor

When I turn on my computer the monitor takes a long time to warm up and colors change and vertical lines flash across the screen from right to left before the screen becomes normal again. Now the power light even goes out upon turning on my computer and I have to unplug the video cord and plug it back in to start the screen back up which even takes longer.

Distorted white lines running across screen

Disconnect the monitor from the computer and turn the monitor on
it will display a diagnostic colorbar are the lines still there.
if not they are likely a cable or video card.
if they are still there have a tech evaluate the monitor.
