Kenmore 90 series gas dryer door will not stay closed

Replace door latch assembly

Could be a defective door latch.
Could be an over-loaded dryer.
If you are not over loading,then replace the door latch.
Cost about 5 bucks.

the one side of the door switch is bad,one side controls the light when the door is open,the other side of this switch makes the unit run when the door is closed,replace the switch,or if you dont care about the door light,reverse the 2 larger connections and it will work again,but no light with door open then

Dryer doors either have a combined switch, with a mechanical lock, or these two things are separate.
Whichever type you have, your description of the latch being loose is telling.
Part of the latch has either snapped off internally, and if so, it would be the part that was under the most pressure, due to having a spring or sprund element behind it, which should 'snap' the door shut.
If it has not broken, the two (possibly 4) mount screws that mount the latch to the door fascia have come loose
and this is why the mechanism is now unreliable.
These screws are only accessible from the interior, on the reverse side of the latch, next to the drum.
Whilst very easy to tighten, only a qualified electrician or service technician should access high voltage equipment..

Inspect the door and when you open it, does the latch hold the door closed? If not the dryer door / latch may need to be replaced.
But check the door as it opens... the door hinges may have been damaged, causing the door to not close properly and the latch may not be damaged, only the hinges.

Sounds like you need a new dryer door latch and catch. Very inexpensive and easy to change.

if you don't mind 'jury rigging' it, you could tape a simple velcro strip to it. 1 piece of the 'hook' side on each side of the door. and 1 long piece of the 'loop' side to go across both pieces of 'hook'. i suggest this pattern because no one likes to grab the 'hook' side with their fingers.

I have the same issue with the door popping open. If you push hard on the bottom of the door then it snaps in. I think the bottom latch is broken or misalligned.

best way is to take door off and take it apart, metal tabs inside hold firm to door body.
