Question about Garmin StreetPilot c340 GPS Receiver
Hi, I've recently purchased a Garmin c340. Its great! My only problem is that at times, when I first start up my car, it could take quite a while to acquire satellite signal. Will an antenna help? The unit is mounted on my dash and I park outside where there are some trees overhead although none of the leaves are in yet. Does anybody have experience with an antenna? Also, how about the less expensive antennas you see on ebay? Thanks, Lou
What is your car brand & model?
I ask, because some vehicles use a thinfilm windshield heater for defrosting/de-icing. This file is conductive, and will act as a shield to the RF microwave signals that GPS operates on. Consulting the owners manual, or the car dealer could help determine if this is your case.
Please try the unit outside the vehicle (in the same location as you have troubles) and see if the issue resolves itself. If so, then yes, using an external antenna can resolve the issue, but it will need to be located in a place not covered by that same problem.
All GARMIN external antennas are waterproof and have a very thin cable, so it could be located outside the vehicle. Alternatively, a side-window mount for the antenna could be used, if that's a viable solution in your application.
The "less-expensive" antennas mentioned can work, most will, but you may not get the optimal performance as one designed specifically for the GARMIN units. Personally, I've used an afermarket one and had good results, but the GARMIN ones always seem better.
