Sony Cybershot DSC-W55 Flash Error Code

I have several cameras that I have been refurbishing and reselling. I recently have attempted to refurbish one that had an error code E:91:01 with no flash function. I replaced the flash board and re-initialized the camera. The code persisted. I then replaced the main board and re-initialized the camera. Still got code. Replaced the ribbon connectors between the boards, no improvement. Returned all cannibalized parts to original cameras, code has now migrated to previously known-good cameras. There is obviously a procedure for resetting this code that is needed when the flash board is disconnected from the main board. I discharged the flash capacitor as directed in the Sony Level 2 Manual for this model with a 1Kohm/1W resistor for 10 seconds before disassembly. When I re-initialize, the screen shows a flash icon with an orange flashing indicator that lingers for a while then beeps repeatedly before disappearing. The camera will work fine except there is no flash function. It shows the same indicator and symptoms after re-initializing with no flash board installed, suggesting that the flash circuit is not even being recognized when installed.
ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

I think maybe you have the camera model confused. There are no controls on this model that you described and there is no LCD cover.

Need help with the Flash error code. Re-initializing does not fix the error.

Ok, i took the entire flash unit with it's associated ribbon connector out of the camera, installed it in another camera and it works fine. I replaced the main board, no go. Replaced the control board, no go. Replaced the lens and the top board too. i cannot figure this out. All of the individual components of this camera will work if installed in another unit. Gremlins I guess.

    sorry for late reply:

This E:91:01 indicate that the camera flash function is need
to replace the faulty flash unit. to get away the E:91:01 flashes on
screen , what you can do is to do a factory reset follow by turning off
the flash function.the screen will not show the E:91:01 and you can use
    the camera without flash function.

I have a method to stop the E:91:01 error flashing on the
were not solve the flash function but atleast you can use the camera
    without flash.
    1)at setup do a initialize.
2)go to flash function to turn off the flash (must do it fast,b4 the E91:01 appear,if not you need to reset it again )
now E91:01 will never can use it like normal,be sure not to
turn on your flash again or go to night mode.if not you need to perform
    step 1 & 2 again.hope it help.

Apparently, if you do a Google search you will find E:91:01 error all
over the place with many Sony digital camera models. I think Sony
engineering needs to fix this for good and Sony QA definitely needs to
do a better job at not selling defective pieces and messing up others
    vacations and works.

note:: error code is normally cleared when u remove the battery. (except for the flash unit)

    also i found that

this is a purely electrical fault.
E 91:01 ----Charging the flash does not complete within the specified time

  • dewan nafees ahmed Mar 26, 2008

tis is some problem with the charging capacitors i think..

  • dewan nafees ahmed Mar 27, 2008

hmmm. seems like a complex problem.

there need to be some place.
it must be either power supply to the flash which is not supplying power enough to get it charged.
else the flash unit itself that is refusing to get it charged.

problem is lying in either of those two places.

now u try to figure it out where exactly. it will need some trial and error methods manually.

E:91:01 is an error code that indicates problem with flash unit circuit in camera.
Flash unit board will be replaced to resolve this problem and temporary fix is to set flash Off quickly, before error could appear after initializing camera, hope this info will help you.
