My refrigerator only kicks on when I adjust the temp knob.

You need to replace ( or have it replaced ) , the thermostat . The piece the knob pushes onto . The liquid is seperated inside the thermostat cap tube , causing the internal contact not to close . Also , a tap on the knob , will start the refrig , until it reaches temp , but then may not restart until another tap . Replace it and that will solve the problem .

Upright freezer not working

Tap on the thermostat , not hard , but not softly either , and see if the freezer starts . If so , replace the thermostat ( the piece behind the temp setting knob )

The refrigerator ignores temperature setting.

Hello, This problem is going to be the cold control/thermostat, this part can be located in the control console inside the fridge bhind the freezer temp control knob (can also be found sometimes in the freezer depending on type/model) The reason your food in the fridge is freezing is because the thermostat controling the freezer temp is not shutting down and the air being blown into the fridge is too cold. Replace this cold control/thermostat and you should be fixed. If you have any other questions or concerns please feel free to comment again and give me some time to respond. Good luck! Mike

Yes you are right the thermostat is not responding to switch off the compressor at the desired temperature setting. It stay "always on" position. Replace the thermostat to rectify this problem....................sodeep
PS: low refrigerant gas could also contribute to aggravate this problem, so have it checked too by the repairman.

Fridge compartment too cold.

Most bottom mount freezer units work by diverting some of the cold freezer air up to the refrigerator through a duct that vents to the top of the refrigerator A thermostat in the refrigerator closes a flap in the duct when the refrigerator is cold enough.

It seems like the thermostat or flap is not working in your refrigerator. You can troubleshoot this by turning the refrigerator to the full warm setting and turning the freezer knob in the cold direction until you hear the refrigerator turn on. Place your hand near the vent at the top of the refrigerator, if cold air comes out that means the flap is not closing like it should.

If the flap is not closing, it might be frosted open. Pop the plastic vent off (they are usually held in with snaps) and inspect the flap. It should open when the fridge knob is turned in the cold direction and close when it is turned in the warm direction. If there is no frost jamming the flap, and the flap is not moving, the thermostat is likely defective. See the pictures below, one is flap open and the other is flap closed.c0498df.jpg67c95ca.jpg

Kenmore Elite bottom freezer suddenly stops making ice.

hi The thermostat control is usually mounted inside the refrigerator. Its visible control knob is turned to regulate the refrigerator/freezer temperature. The workability of this control can be tested in various ways, depending on the problem. To test the thermostat control:

Step 1:
If the compressor runs all the time, turn the control knob to the OFF position. If the compressor still runs, unplug the unit, then pull off the control knob and remove the screws holding the thermostat in place. Pull out the thermostat and remove either the red or the blue wire from its terminal. Plug in the unit. If the compressor doesn't run, the thermostat is faulty. Replace it with a new thermostat.

Step 2:
If the compressor runs after the wire is removed from its terminal, there is probably a short circuit somewhere in the unit's wiring. In this case, don't try to fix the problem yourself; call a professional service person.

Step 3:
If the refrigerator or freezer runs but the box doesn't cool, unplug the unit and remove the thermostat with a screwdriver. Disconnect both wires from the thermostat. Tape the ends of the wires together with electrical tape, and plug in the appliance. If the refrigerator starts and runs normally, the thermostat is faulty. Replace it with a new one of the same type. Connect the new thermostat the same way the old one was connected.

Step 4:
If the freezer compartment is normal but the refrigerator box doesn't cool, set the dials that control both compartments to mid-range. Remove these knobs (they're usually friction-fit). Then unscrew the temperature control housing; you'll see an air duct near the control. Replace the knob on the freezer thermostat and turn the control to the OFF position. Open the refrigerator door and look closely at the air duct. If this duct doesn't open wider in about ten minutes, the control is faulty. Replace the control with a new one of the same type. Connect the new control the same way the old one was connected.
