Water freezes on fins but will not defrost automatically.

Frozen fins
once the frozen unit is turned off and back on the fan runs causing the unit to defrost, however the compressor does not restart until the next time the unit is restarted.

Dehumidifier

when ice forms on an evaporator unit (coil) there is an indication of internal problems with the unit. IT may occur if there is insufficient air flow ( dirty or fan speed to low ) but when this happens the thermostat just orders more gas through the tx valve and so more ice is formed then the thermostat reads it as too cold and so cuts the gas flow back by controlling the operation of the tx valve
Water from a dehumidifier will depend on the atmosphere humidity so the lower the humidity reading the less water collected
However I suggest that you have a technician check it out as the compressor start/run capacitor may be faulty and that is why the compressor is not getting hot as it may not be running properly

My dehumidifier ddr557he will no longer defrost. How do I repair this?

well there are three things i know of that can cause this :
1st your filters are dirty needs cleaning .
2nd your humistat is set too low , unit runs too long with out a cool down period , 70% rh is a "normal" setting
3rd in older units that might be getting up there in years its possible that some of the cooling gas has leaked out and this causes freeze ups

Frozen filter

This can typically be caused by two items, low refrigeration gas or insufficient air flow. I would shut the unit down, unplug it and let it set for a day to thaw out. Clean all the air passages and replace the filter. Plug it in and turn it back on. If it continues to freeze you probably have either low refrigeration gas or a fan that is not opperating properly.

My dehumidifier freezes up. It starts collecting frost within just a few minutes. It is in a basement which is very damp and temp is about 77F. The fan is working on HIGH. Freeze sensor has been...

I don't think there is anything wrong with your machine ... What I think you should do is get another fan and blow air onto the rear of your dehumidifier. I also think you should select a higher setting until you get some of the water out of the air. When you get down to 80% for example (evidenced by the machins turning off - set it then to 70% and so on until you arrive at the moisture content you desire (50% is usually considered perfect.) You might also consider adding another machine to help the first, same setup with a fan blowing on it.

This is what I did when my dehumidifier did the same thing yours is doing.

Thanks for your quesiton @ FixYa.com

My dehumidifier compressor runs and then shuts off, then runs and shuts off, continuously. The fan continues to run. It seems to be pulling water, though it's hard to tell how much because I have a...

Part of the problem may be that you have the humidity level set to high. The fan runs constantly to move the air around. When the unit senses a humidity level higher than what you have it set for, the compressor turns ON. Once it's ON, if the humidity level is short lived, it turns OFF.

Try setting the humidity level to the lowest possible setting. Usually, that 45%. If the humidity level in you home is higher than that, the compressor should turn ON and run until either the bucket is full or the humidity level reaches 45%. If this doesn't solve the problem, turn the Master ON/OFF Switch to OFF and unplug the unit from the wall outlet for 12-15 minutes. Plug the unit bakc in, turn the Master ON/OFF Switch to ON and set the humidity level at it's lowest setting. Allow the unit to run until it cuts OFF and check the bucket for water. Hopefully that 12-15 minute time out allowed the unit to reset itself.

Hope this helped you to troubleshoot and solve the problem. Please let me know. Thanks.

Unit comes on compresor and fan run but not collect much water

If the room temperature is close to 60, the coils may be frozen (completely encased in ice). If this is the case, move it where the water can drain off - about 1 gallon which may NOT run into the drain bucket.
I out mine over the floor drain.
Turn off and it will defrost over night.
Only specially made dehumidifiers work below a room temp of 60 degrees (the temp of a basement in winter).
Does it need to be running? A digital humidity sensor from Radio Shack is cheap and may tell you the humidity is OK - only 50% or less.

Humidifier compressor does not stay on more than 1-2 minutes

Sounds like bad relay on compressor or bad compressor. There is only so far you can go yourself without knowledge in electrical and AC units. Suggest you call a service tech or if you can take it to service cemter near you. Russ

Amana 30 (looks like dk25) unit runs but coils freeze up

Most dehumidifiers have a defrost mode in which the compressor is turned off to give time for the frozen water to melt. The freezing problem ocurrs when the unit is used in very cold weather. Check your manual to see if this unit comes with automatic defrost mode. If it does, it would appear that it is not operating correctly and you can request warranty service. If no defrost mode is available, then your only option is to heat up the room in order to use the dehumidifer within its limit of operation. Some units can operate as low as 36 F, but most units cannot go that low. Find out what your unit's specs are from the manufacturers web site.
