It is now not being recognised by the computer. i have tried it in another computer but it is no good. any ideas is it the power source or the hard drive itself? Thanks

It's hard to say from your description what the problem is but the first thing to do is determine the condition of the drive. You can check if there are problems with the drive using the free trial version of http://www.hdtune.com/

If it checks out ok then you can try to recover your data with Recuva it's free http://www.piriform.com/recuva

Or if you need data recovery help this a good choice for low cost and fast data recovery. All data recovery work is performed remotely over the Internet from a boot cd that you download and the best part is they just ask for donations if you are happy with the results: http://FreeDataRecovery.us

I have a packard bell store and save 3500 250gb and it seems that it has packed it. i need to get the files of the hard drive how can i fix it?

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

I have a packard bell store and save 3500 250gb. The ac adapter has broken and I have been looking for a replacement without success. Do you know where I might get a replacement adapter.

You need to know the voltage and minimum current for the device. The old adapter should show both, as in 5V, 100 ma (V=voltage, ma=milliamps current) Places like Radio Shack have multi-voltage, high current replacements.

The voltage MUST match, the current CAN be higher but NOT lower.

I am not getting power to the external hard drive. when i plug in the ac adapter, i get a flashing green light on the adapter but no power to the disk. could the ac adapter be bad?

It's probably _NOT_ the AC adapter, given that the lamp is "green".

Disassemble the casing, and temporarily connect the disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive in some desktop computer, to see if the disk itself is still functioning & its files can be read.

Seagate 1TB Free Agent Quit Working

Hi,
It looks like its just the ac-adapter that is dead.
I would contact the store you bought the harddrive, and ask if they just can send you a new ac-adapter.
Btw backup means that you have saved your data 2 places.

Retrieving information from my external hard drive

Check to see if you can see your drive in DOS. To start ...run ...type in CMD and hit return. Then type E: (it should be the last drive letter...if not e: try F: etc..).....and return ...then type DIR and hit return....can you see the files on the drive ? might be security software you have running or it might be one of the Microsoft services not running....try the above 1st it should prove if its a windows problem..
