Question about Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

1 Answer

Greetings, I need help trying to recover some files on my pc. I had an XP installation working fine on a single hd setup with about 25 gb free space. I tried partitioning the drive (c to free up that empty space so that I could install Windows 7 on it, (i guess its called dual boot?) I used a free partition manager program from download.com, it went through the setup and had to restart the pc and continue from dos to finish. That's where it went to hell. I could not boot the drive again, due to a NTLDR file missing error. I tried some recommendations on using the XP install CD. The cd can't find any windows installs. The recovery console, FIXBOOT didn't work. BOOTCFG recommended I use CHKDSK to look for errors and fix them-I didn't find any. FIXMBR says I have invalid MBR, so I had it write a new one. Now my current normal boot results in : Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: system32hal.dll. Please re-install a copy of the above file. I also tried the recommendations on ntldrismissing.com to no avail. The only thing I care about right now is a couple of important folders on that drive that I would like to recover. So I connected the drive to another PC and attempted to use Easus partition tools to recover. Nothing. Any Ideas?

It seems like that "free" partition manager, was not free after all. When it's something as important as your HD you should seriously consider anything free as "if this doesn't work, u'll get NO help" type of thing. It sounds like it's trying to boot from the part of the drive that you partitioned and now can't because there is no OS there (or a damaged one). Depending upon how important the folders are u may want to consider professional recovery. Wish I had better news.

When you delete files from anything on a computer, they are not really removed. What happens is the record(s) for a given file in the MFT (master file table) are removed and the space used for that give file is marked as available. As long as you haven't been copying new files to the drive. Download and run Recuva which is free. Use the deep scan feature and let it run and see what it is able to recover. Then copy the files to a different disc than the one you are recovery from.

Can windows 7 run GTA IV.

Hi,
Running GTA 4 on windows 7 should not be a problem. You just have to run the installer using compatibility mode. Right click on the "setup.exe" then choose Properties. Go to Compatibility tab and tick "run this program in compatibility mode for", choose windows xp sp 3. That should allow you to install GTA 4 on windows 7. Bear in mind that you have to install GfW Live and the C++ 2005 files seperately which can be found in the disk as well. More importantly, make sure that your computer meets the system requirements for the game.
Here it is: System Requirements
Minimum System Requirements
OS: Windows Vista - Service Pack 1 / XP - Service Pack 3 Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8Ghz, AMD Athlon X2 64 2.4Ghz Memory: 1.5GB, 16GB Free Hard Drive Space Video Card: 256MB NVIDIA 7900 / 256MB ATI X1900
Recommended System Requirements
OS: Windows Vista - Service Pack 1 / XP - Service Pack 3 Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4Ghz, AMD Phenom X3 2.1Ghz Memory: 2 GB (Windows XP) 2.5 GB (Windows Vista) 18 GB Free Hard Drive Space Video Card: 512MB NVIDIA 8600 / 512MB ATI 3870
After installing the game and you're not able to run it, Try running the main executable file of the game in compatibility mode as well.

Hope this helps.

How to install xp in HP Pavilion dv6 1030 us Laptop and how to repartition my C: drive especially I have still 150 GB free space in C drive Please help me in this case Thanks in advance.

get a winxp installer CD, you can repartition your drive on the first part of the winxp installation process. Prepare your drivers for your machine especially the network and USB drivers which you will need to copy and transfer files firstly.
If u meant of installing an additional OS like winxp to your extra space, you need a boot loader to switch between OSes.hope this helps

Hard Drive Problem

Greetings...

You have 3 paths to look at and you also need to think about the need to change out Vista for XP...

Vista has gotten a bad rap on being something that does not work... it works fine... unless you have some very old program that you have to have for your job, Vista will work just fine...

Now... 1. you can install a boot manager and have both Vista and XP on your computer... 2. you can reformate you HD and install XP, you have an XP disk and code??? 3. you can run Virtual PC on Vista and install XP, still need the disk and code...
Virtual PC will allow you to fire up XP and run it as a separate program on top of Vista... and it's a free download...

Still I would look at just why you need to change... I have been running Vista since before it came out and other than a couple of programs in the beginning were a problem, everything works just great...

Have a great day...
