1950's sunbeam wafflemaker

I have an old 1950's chrome covered waffle maker. I would like to know how to take out the waffle plates so that I may clean them. I pried and pried with a screwdriver and even hit the screwdriver with a hammer for more power, but no success.

Do you think the plates come out?
