Check the pilot light, sometimes it is hard to see if it is lit, so move your vision around the pilot light area and if you still don't see a flame, try lighting it until you do. that and or you don't have a valve or pipe hooked up properly to allow the water to flow through.

Ihave all valves open on hot water tank not getting hot water

If it is a Gas water heater, check the pilot and/or the igniter. If it is an electric heater, check to ensure the the power source is available. If power is available, it could be the thermostatic controller or possibly the heater elements are burned out.

Brand new water heater is not heating up. checked the upper heat element and got 240 volts reading, the bottom one is not reading any voltage. Please help

1) If upper element is receiving 240V, then water heater should have some hot water.
If upper element is burned out, then tank will have no hot water, but element will still test for 240V
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-test-water-heater-element.html
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-troubleshoot-electric-problems-with-water-heater.html

2) Keep in mind that upper element heats top part of tank first.
Only when top part of tank reaches thermostatic temperature will power be sent to lower thermostat and element. This is called non-simultaneous operation.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-it-works.html

3) Non-simultaneous operation is necessary for most water heater installations because both elements are not ON at same time. Either upper element is ON or lower element is ON or both are off.
Each element is typically 4500 watts, which is 18.75 amps.
If both elements were ON at same time, it would consume 37.5 amps, so circuit breaker would have to be 40 or 50 amp with 8 or 6 gauge wire.

4) Add a comment with your experience so others with same-similar problem can benefit.

New Rheem electric 50 gallon not heating

Check the elements, if you have access to a meter to check them. If they are getting power to elements and you have no hot water.
The elements are not working correctly. I had some elements check out ok till the thermostat's turned on and the elements didn't heat.
Sounds like the elements are bad.

Sounds like a squirrel inside water heater

Hi,
The noise is inherent in electric hot water heaters. It is the noise that the water makes when it is being heated by electric heating elements. Mineral buildup on the elements can make it worse, so changing the elements can help...but will not totally elimenate the noise. When I install a new tank and turn it on all I have to do is listen to it to see if it is working or not...even brand new will make a sound...it is the sound of hot water... :-)

Not heating

un hook the incoming power lines, turn the breaker back on, and carefully measure power between the 2 hot wires, not the ground. You must have 220 to 240 volts between these 2 wires, if you dont either the breaker is bad, or the wire is broken somewhere. If you have 240 volts to the heater, with the power OFF unhook the wires from both elements and use an ohm meter to test the resistance on the elements, both should be around 30 ohms and about the same, if not one is bad. Test across the elements after re connecting them and turning the power on you must have 240 volts across the elements when they are on, if you have only 120 or 0 then the trouble is the breaker or the wire.

We just bought a new water heater and it's not heating up water.

The heating element was bad. It's hard to believe that a brand new water heater would have a burn element, but that's the problem. I replace the heating element and its started working properly.
