Operating system not found is the message I get when trying to turn on my ze5185. If I leave it on for several hours with this message on the display it will start. My guess it has a thermal open which expands and makes contact when it gets warm after displaying this message for several hours.

there is problem with your hard disk. your hard disk wire may be loose. try to remove and refix all sata wires of your hard disk. "operating system not found" message may be coming because you may have not installed any os (windows, linux or mac) in your notebook. try to install operating to system to fix this. there may also be proble with your hard disk, your hard disk may be dead. if your notebook is showing message "operating system not found" without any reason then you may have put your notebook in high magnetic field area. due to high magnetic field, sometimes hard disk's are formatted automatically.
Where are a number of way to do this on a Pavillion. However, HP has not standardized this procedure. The following are three ways they have setup to do it.
Turn on the computer. When the initial blue HP screen appears Press the "F10" key. A Recovery menu will appear. Click on "NEXT" and then click on "YES" Your system will now go through the product recovery
Starting recovery within Windows XP From the Desktop, click "START". Then "ALL PROGRAMS" Then "HP TOOLS" Then Click on "HP PC SYSTEM RECOVERY" You will now be asked "Do you really want to start HP PC System Recovery?" Click on "YES" to continue. Your system will now go through the product recovery.
This message means that the hard disk was not detected, this is due to either the BIOS setting was changed or the hard disk has failed.
Try booting up with a DOS disk and run FDISK, and see if it detects the hard drive, if possible run a diag test program.
indeed you are having and ATI chip beneath the keyboard. (a BGA 256 ball ATI Mobility) Unfortunately due to rights the laptop manufacturers are developing the graphic drivers and not ATI so these drivers you found are at best totally incompatible.
Go to this Link from HP and download ZE 5185 model that you own - Also you will find manuals and all other drivers for the laptop.
