Question about Linksys WRT160N Wireless Router

1 Answer

Continually disconnects internet at random

For seemingly no rhyme or reason , my router (Lynksis WRT160N) disconnects from the internet randomly at least once a week.

I have anm always on connection and there should be no conflict whatsoever with internet.

It has cost nme thousands in lost revenue as I broadcast to the internet and when I lose signal I lose customers who may never return.

It is a wirless router only. A linksys WRT160N V2.

The modem is seperate and recieves its IP from the Router. The modem never disconnects. However, the router, does. Often. And I have to restart it and, voila, the internet is back. But whoever was subscribed and listening to my service is gone and most never return.

I have been looking around the net and it seems this is the worst version (V2) to have. They haven't updated the firmware since 07/09 even though people have issues with it. Instead they came out with a version 3 with, from what I can gather, uses a different chipset.

I was just wondering if anyone had figured out a configuration that made this item stable. Or if I should just bag it and replace it. the Firmware is the most recent and DD-WRT does not support it.

The firmware is the latest build as I stated in the description and it does not appear they will build another.
This is everyone's first answer, that is why I clarified it in the question. The router already has the lastest available firmware. It is not supported by DD-WRT.
I was hoping maybe it was a configuration problem and someone had stumbled upon a fix.
It is important to note in responses that this is a WRT160N "V2".
There are three versions. (V1,V2 & V3) they do not tell you that when you buy them. Version 3 has the newest firmware of course but it is not transferrable.
After many hours of scouring the net, I have found that this problem has been out there and people have been asking for 2 years with no real solution.
Quite possibly I may have just bought an outdated and inferior product.
It would be more humane if the company would just say that in response to the question and maybe offer 5% off on the new version. But that would be good business.

Is it a modem/router? or just a router? cause you can be having a wireless problem with the linksys or a intermitent connection with your service provider.

You have WR160N router. This router has issues with the firmware.
Try to upgrade the firmware of the router. Firmware is the software of the router.
Download the latest firmware of the router. Go to the manufacturer's web site and download the firmware of the router.
Open the set up page of the router and upgrade the firmware of the router. Once you upgrade the firmware of the router, reset the router.
On the router you will find a small reset button, hold it down for 30 seconds. release it. wait for 1 minute. Now unplug the power to the router and plug it back in.
Now you will need to reconfigure the router according to the Internet service provider.

I would reset the router to default settings and use the good version of the firmware. OR delete your existing internet setup and then re-add it (do this if you didnt factory default your router before upgrading firmware)

Random disconnections, DNS/key port failure

I would guess from your desciption that the router is around 2 years old. What you are seeing are typical for a failing home router. There are a few things you can try such as installing updates but generally those won't help for long. I've tried several things but in the end I ended up replacing it with a new one, That is what I would reccomend doing.

Limited or no connectivity to the internet. my setup: the telephone port is approx 30m from where i need internet access. Originally I had a dlink wireless router set up but was connected via cable, now...

On which port of the D-link router did you plug the WRT160N router?

Do this setup.

Disconnect the WRT160N from D-link.

Connect a computer to port 1 of the WRT160N. Access the setup page by typing 192.168.1.1 on the address bar. you may need to type in the username and password for WRT160N. on the setup page Change the LAN IP address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.2.1. save the settings.

Connect a cable from port 1,2,3 or 4 of the D-link router to the Internet port of the WRT160N. turn off everything then turn them on starting from cable modem>D-link >WRT160N then computer.

You should be able to access the internet.
