My freezer side does not drop below 28-30 degrees, so it does not produce ice or keep food frozen. My refrigerator side maintains a consistent temperature of 32 degrees. I monitor both with thermostats. The cold air blows most of the time in the freezer and there is no ice on the radiator. I did turn the freezer off for 2 hours and left the door open to be sure there was no ice. I keep my freezer at a setting of 5 out of 6 to maintain a steady 28-30 degrees. I had it at 3.5 out of 6 for a while but it was of course warmer. Do you know if I need to replace a part to make my freezer side colder and produce ice again?

You would have to remove the back lower panel of the freezer section to get a feel as to whats going on in there. behind the panel you will find an evaporator panel that should have consist ant frost pattern from top to bottom with no excessive clumps of ice.I'm assuming you don'totherwise your refrig would be working ok..
either theres only the top 1 or 2 coils actually have ice on them, and the rest of the coil is bright shiny aluminum. or there is an excessive amount of ice built up so far that you dont even see an evap coil.
if the first is true and threre little frost then that points to a sealed system/ low freon issue. and call a servicer. you should have a full 5 yr warr. for sucha problem
if its the second issue hen theres a defrost problem and youll need to replace either the defrost heater, defrost thermstat( most likely),or the defrost board/timer

Many residential refrigerator / freezers are designed to work at temperature considerably above above freezing. Most modern refrigerator / freezer have a single electric thermostat - located in the fresh food compartment. This lone thermostat will control the compressor to keep the fridge (fresh food) section at the desired temperature (usually between 34 - 38 degrees F). The freezer will get colder regardless of how cold it is already whenever the fridge thermostat turns the compressor on.
Now that you see how the thermostat works, let's look at what happens when the fridge is placed in an unheated space - like a garage. In winter time, the temperature can drop considerably below 38 degrees. If the outdoor temperature remains cold enough, for long enough - it will affect the thermostat in the fridge. The temperature inside the fridge could drop below 38 degrees, preventing the thermostat from telling the compressor to turn on. Meanwhile, the temperature in the freezer compartment slowly rises from the normal -10 to 0 F degrees. It will continue to rise until it is the same temperature as the fresh food compartment or until the thermostat in the fresh food compartment tells the compressor to turn on again. This means the freezer contents will thaw.
If the temperature in the garage is even in the 40 to 50 degree range, the loss of cold in the fridge may not happen often enough to keep the compressor coming on often enough to keep some freezer items frozen solid - such as ice cream. Remember, water freezes at 32 degrees F, other products may require lower temperatures to remain frozen, and could thaw at 28 or other temperature.
Some models designed today or in the last 10 years use a super cool model prior to defrosting, this is in two models off the top of my head, Kitchen Aid, and GE or more common. This is to protect the food in the freezer, so the drop the temperature within the compartment to allow temps to rise in defrost mode without affecting the temperature of the food. What you see is cabinet temperature in the display, if you unit fails to produce ice of notice food not frozen then I would be concerned. It sounds like this is what your talking about. I would not worry, this is normal to most units today. If you are still uneasy, you can alway call the manufacture and inquire about temperature issue that you see. Most units use a variable speed compressors and is designed to drop temperature faster after defrost than any other time.
I would not worry as long as it holds temperature and produces ice on demand.
Hi: Not knowing how long it's been hooked up... Ice production can take as long as 72 hrs to start. Usually 24 to 48 hrs. The freezer also has to be stable at 0 degrees F to start producing ice. The tray mab be full but it wont dump untill 0 degrees F. Another thing is it's human nature to keep opening the freezer to see if Ice has been made. This justs dumps the cold air out and will slow the ice production. Just because your food is frozen dosn't mean it is at 0 degrees F. Ice cream should be rock hard. Try setting your freezer colder and allow 24 hrs for it to stabilize. This is the best try and it usually works, before calling a tech. I hope this helps, Jeff
one of the hardest things to diagnous is food defrosting in the freezer. i found out the hard way about 35 years ago, but not until i banged my head against the wall a few times. the problem was the customer didn't have enough food in the freezer as she was a weekender.frozen food needs frozen food to keep the food frozen confused? so was i . every time your refrigerator goes into defrost( usually every 8 hours) a heating coil comes on in the back of the freezer. if the freezer is not full enough this heater can raise the temperature in the freezer to 40 degrees which will soften the food and melt the ice considering the time it takesto refreeze the food. i never forgot that service in fact i can see it in my head right now.. try this cure first let me know
Ice cream requires a significantly lower freezing point than other foods. Keep it near the blowers or coils in most freezers and you'll be OK. Turn up the freezer a bit, and if it is all the way then move it away from the wall a bit more
