No the audio heads are all on the video head drum. Try a head cleaning.

Image distorted on panasonic nv-fj620

I can't say for certain but it sounds like the video head might have gone. The good news is that you can get the parts from Curry's Partmaster website. Perhaps cheaper elsewhere? The bad news is that video heads are not cheap!

I don't know how you cleaned the head. So I would advise trying again to make certain. I would recommend cleaning with Servisol Video 40 several times. If that still doesn't work I would assume the head to have gone.

Have Akai GX 630 D Reel2Reel, left channel sounds dull.

THis problem could be due to heads not being clean, CLEAN, or tape head alignment needs checking. test playback with a tape you KNOW to play well on another machine...demagnetizing can also improve play and record performance. A damaged tape guide post could also be the problem but this is not likely. Lift up the hinged head cover and using a flashlight and a mirror ensure that all three heads are CLEAN and shiny...clean guide posts too. test play with a tape known to be good.

I have just purchased a tandberg 15.22 its in v good cond, no apparent head wear, I've replaced the belt (slow rewind) capstan is fine, there is distortion on the amp, I've cleane the record/amp/playback...

Resistors are good at causing distortion, you might spot one that has burned or broken. If the distortion is in both channels, which by what you say it is, then you might be looking for something common to both channels. Perhaps an IC.

Playback distortion

Good day sir, distortion can be caused by several factors, 1. overdriven audio source, try tuning down the volume to half. 2. the speakers are defective due to driver's coil scratching the magnet. need to replace the speakers, better swap first any good known speakers. hope this may help. if you may have any more questions, feel free to ask again. thanks

Distorted sound on playback, samsung mini dv camcorder.

Try a DV tape cleaner first. If that doesn't work, see what it would take to get the audio heads realigned. Any camera store can do that for you.

Nakamichi CR-4 Only Recording on One Channel...need help!

Hmmm.....heres a really stupid question but........is the head clean ? There may be a bit of oxide shorting the one side of the head out. Try cleaning the head with a q-tip and some 99% pure isopropyl alcohol. If you have done that ( you seem to be more knowledgeable than most ), I would suspect either the circuit that drives the right channel record head, or the head itself. Is the head running flat against the tape?. Is there a record/play relay or record relay somewhere in the circuit ?. I think at this point you really need a schematic. Do you have the AC oscillator signal ( bias ) present on the right record head ?. I would try this first, then look into a manual.......Good luck...Rob

Is the brake tension and alignment okay? What did you clean the drum with, fluid and stick? Did you clean the rest of the path as well - erase head, audio heads, capstan, pinch roller - etc?

Problems with playback of HI8 tapes...

What's happening is that the tape in the cassette is being chewed on one side by the camera's tape transporting mechanism during playback, hence the distorted image and sound. The mechanism might be damaged (misalignment) or just dirty. Try not to play other tapes on this unit because they will become permanently damaged. The best way is to find another camcorder (if cleaning does not help). Note that some old cassettes of long recording time will exhibit this behavior more often because of thinner tape used.

Bad playback quality

Some possible cause of lines, noise or pixelation during playback are: 1. Dirty heads on the recording machine. If the heads were dirty at the time of recording, the dirty heads didn't record a strong enough signal on the tape. The damage is done for this tape and recovery is unlikely. Best advice here is to use only premium grade new tapes and keep your camcorder clean by occasionally running a cleaning tape. 2. Physical tape damage. Any distortion of the tape will result in mistracking and subsequent loss of data. 3. Built up oxide deposits or other debris in the guidepost corners can also result in tape edge damage. Keep your machine clean! 4. Improper tape storage - Even short term exposure to high temperatures over 130 deg f. can permanently damage the tape. The black cassette housing readily absorbs the sun's infrared rays and internal cassette temperatures can soar even if left in direct sunlight on just a warm day. It doesn't take much heat to slightly distort the plastic shell or ruin the tape contained within. * Try other tapes to ensure the problem lies within the tape and not the camcorder. * If the problem becomes apparent on all tapes, try a head cleaner. After cleaning the heads, the tapes may not play cleaner if the recording was done while the heads were dirty.
