Question about Xantrex Technology Heart Freedom 30 Inverter/Charger, 3000w 130a, 81-3011-12

I have a #20 charger inverter on my sailboat. It has worked fine for several years. This winter, I replaced the battery bank with 4 Trojan T-105. Batteries are fully charged, new battery wiring and connectors but when plugged in to 120V, at the dock, the charger makes a periodic "clunk" as it seems to engage and disengage. Concurrently, the monitor panel shows the battery "charge state" as either 'half' or 'low' but, when I push the charge button, and cycle the led over to 'full' the charger cuts out, and everything returns to normal; for an extended period. The only thing that I added, deifferently than before, is the ground wire from the housing to the boat ground post. For some reason, the original installer left this off. Greatful for any help I can get with this. Thanks, John

Without more information, it could be a number of things. For starters, you might try disconnecting the ground wire to see if that makes any difference. The Xantrex Owner's/Installation Manual says specifically not to connect the inverter's negative *battery cable* to the vessel ground, but if the unit's housing and the negative cable share a common ground somewhere inside the unit, that would be the same thing. The T-105s are great batteries, but since they are 6V, make sure you rewired them correctly, i.e. a pair in series (12V) wired in parallel with the other pair for 450 AH total. Recheck all your battery connections and make sure you didn't blow the inline battery fuse in case you inadvertently made a momentary wrong connection during the new battery installation.

I worked in electronic repair for 20 + years and recently have have this model in my shop...the problem turned out to be a ruptured electrolytic capacitor on the power supply board reference number EC17 in the backlight inverter supply....Changed this capacitor along with the capacitor next to it ref # EC18, and television worked fine...these capacitors are rated for high temp and high frequency...their value is 10uF/450Volt 105 degrees C...you can obtain them from NTE electronics at a cost of about 4-6 dollars each.

I want to charge a newly activated vrla battery with a automaticly charger 800mA,is this possible? Or is it nessecary too charge my new 14Ah battery with 1.4A charger for the first time? grtz Toon Janssen


well now you should never charge a battery with more that its C-10 rate that is 1 - 10th its amp hours so if your battery is 14ah then its 1 - 10th charge rate of ie:1.4ah,,, so you wonting to use an 800ma charger will trickel charge it just fine as thats near as d*m it C20 half of whats the C10 for this battery is so hook it up its fine and wont over charge it and it should be fully charged in 17.5 hours,,,
if your going to lay the bike up for any time its a good idear to get one of them 2.5 watt solar chargers hook it up to the battery and forget about it i do it with my bikes (bmw 750 with a 35ah battery) over every winter and when i go back to it in the spring it fires up first time every time there fairly cheap and it only needs day light to work,,,free power!!! cant be all bad!
my solar charger cost £20 off of e-bay,, best $20 i ever spent too, my battery is now 4 years old and still going strong as i never let it go flat,,,

I have a Heart Interface Freedom 20 Inverter/Battery Charger installed on a powerboat. The fan (cooling fan?) is making noise - it seems to be rubbling inside the unit. Is there a way to repair? Replace...


The fan can be replaced. It is very similar to some of the PC cooling fans. I've got the same problem (again) and will be replacing it soon. I will give you the fan specs once I remove my fan ( I think it is 4" 120VAC - will let you know when I repair mine).

Xantrex Freedom 458 Combi inverter/charger 2000 watt


OK my 2000 Discovery does the same thing. Try and hit the inverter charger with your fist 3-4 times, then listen and see if the charger fan starts up. I will be bringing my inverter to Portland this week to have the tech look at it. The other thing is it could be the transfer switch. Will let you know.

I think the problem might be your battery setup.
First of all, these batteries are not deep-cycle batteries they may not tolerate this kind of usage. Secondly, if you have 20 batteries connected in parallel they could end up working  against each other (draining each other) all the time.
You might do better with 2 very large 6 volt deep-cycle golf cart or fork lift batteries.
