It can be a problem with your usb port, or with the adapter. try to uninstall the adapter and reinstall it. if that doesnt help try pluging the adapter in another port.
If this doesnt help just replace the adapter .

Netgear wg111v2 wireless usb adapter wont acquire ip address

Not sure if this is where you are looking, but it probably is. click START then CONNECT TO then SHOW ALL CONNECTIONS then right click LOCAL AREA CONNECTION click STATUS then SUPPORT,,,
or CONTROL PANEL then NETWORK CONNECTIONS then right click LOCAL AREA CONNECTIONS then click STATUS then SUPPORT tab
See what you have there for an IP address
Is it the computer you don't have an IP for or the router? In my case my computer IP the 8th or last digit is the next number after what it is for the router. The other numbers are the same

Netgear usb adapter will not acquire ip address from router

Most laptops have a wireless card built in them and if you have one you should try using that instead and form past experiences USB adapters don't generally work on laptops in which case if you laptop has the slot for it you should buy a card like this http://www.netgear.com/Products/Adapters/SuperGWirelessAdapters/WG511T.aspx
